There is an inherent problem with ranking a wing against a scrum-half, fly-half or elite forward.
A scrum-half can influence possession after possession. A fly-half can control territory. A forward can carry, tackle, attack the breakdown and influence the set piece.
A wing cannot force himself into every phase.

Louis Bielle-Biarrey also benefits from playing in two attacks capable of creating opportunities. Union Bordeaux Begles and France Rugby can move defenses and manufacture the space he exploits.
That is the strongest argument against ranking him No. 1.
But positional involvement and match influence are not necessarily the same thing.
Bielle-Biarrey's case rests on what happens when those opportunities arrive. His anticipation, acceleration, support lines, footwork and finishing have allowed him to convert them into points at an extraordinary rate.
More importantly, he has done it when the matches mattered most.
Four tries across consecutive Champions Cup finals. Two against Ireland. Four against England in a 48-46 game.
Bielle-Biarrey may touch the ball less frequently than the world's best halfbacks and forwards.
Few players have made their touches matter more.
Why Bielle-Biarrey Ranks Ahead Of Antoine Dupont
Antoine Dupont demonstrates exactly why ranking a wing No. 1 is difficult.
FloRugby's No. 1 player in 2024 has the vision, distribution, leadership and two-way influence to shape an entire match from scrum-half. Bielle-Biarrey cannot match the breadth of that involvement.
But this ranking is about what happened over the period being judged.
Dupont's 2025 ACL injury severely limited his 2026 international involvement. Bielle-Biarrey, meanwhile, scored 34 tries in 30 club games, broke his own Six Nations try record and delivered repeatedly in championship matches.
Dupont remains the more complete playmaker. Bielle-Biarrey produced the better year.
Why Bielle-Biarrey Ranks Ahead Of Ardie Savea
Ardie Savea, FloRugby's No. 1 player in 2025, presents the same problem from the opposite end of rugby's positional spectrum.
Savea, the All Black captain who won a JRLO title, can carry, defend, attack the breakdown and provide leadership. His influence extends into areas a wing rarely enters.If No. 1 meant the player capable of affecting the greatest number of phases, Savea would have the advantage.
But Bielle-Biarrey's influence has been more decisive over the period being judged.
He has turned opportunities into tries with extraordinary consistency for Bordeaux and France, including in European finals and major Test matches.
Savea can influence more phases. Bielle-Biarrey has changed more scoreboards.
What Cheslin Kolbe Shows About The Modern Wing
South Africa's Cheslin Kolbe provides a more direct comparison.
Like Bielle-Biarrey, Kolbe can change a match through footwork, agility and attacking intelligence. But his 2025-26 season in Japan, and this summer's run with the Springboks, also demonstrated another way a wing can expand his influence.
Kolbe scored 205 club points, including 10 tries, 43 conversions and 23 penalties.
That kicking responsibility gives Kolbe something Bielle-Biarrey does not have: a way to influence the scoreboard without needing an attacking opportunity on the wing.
It strengthens Kolbe's case as a more multidimensional player. Bielle-Biarrey's answer is the overwhelming scale of his primary weapon.
He scored 34 tries in 30 club games and nine in the Six Nations. His Test record reached 29 tries in 27 appearances. And his biggest performances repeatedly arrived in the biggest matches.
Dupont can control more possessions. Savea can dominate more phases. Kolbe has expanded the traditional responsibilities of a wing.
All three illustrate what Bielle-Biarrey does not do. None changes what he does better than anyone else. Bielle-Biarrey turns opportunities into decisive points at a rate rugby has struggled to contain.
A wing does not need to control every part of a match to be its most important player. Bielle-Biarrey has proved that controlling the outcome can be enough.
