URC Predictions: Full Table, Playoff Picks And Championship Forecast

The United Rugby Championship enters 2026-27 with a familiar group of title contenders and what could be a brutal race just to make the playoffs.

Leinster remains the standard and is the pick to finish first. The two-time defending URC champion still has extraordinary forward depth, with Test-level quality throughout the pack and enough talent to withstand international windows better than almost anyone.

But this does not look like a runaway.

Glasgow finished above Leinster last season, the Bulls reached the final and the Stormers have arguably made the most consequential offseason moves.

FloRugby’s 2026-27 URC Table Prediction

The Stormers are the biggest threat to Leinster.

They finished third last season with a plus-160 point differential and reached the semifinals. Now Siya Kolisi, Cheslin Kolbe and Wilco Louw have joined a group already featuring Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, Damian Willemse and Evan Roos. Their biggest concern is lock depth, but their 92% URC scrum and 91% lineout last season give them a championship-caliber platform.

The Bulls stay third despite losing Louw, Ruan Nortjé, Kurt-Lee Arendse and David Kriel. Handré Pollard, Embrose Papier, Canan Moodie and a loaded back row keep them among the elite, though Springbok availability could prevent their best lineup from spending much of the regular season together.

Glasgow falls from first to fourth, but that's hardly a collapse. Franco Smith's team went 13-5 and unbeaten at home last season. Losing Huw Jones, Adam Hastings, Jack Dempsey, Johnny Matthews and Jamie Bhatti is enough turnover to predict some regression, but Glasgow's system and development pipeline should keep it firmly in the top four.

The bold call is the Sharks at No. 5. They finished 10th despite a plus-39 differential and a 7-2 home record. Their 1-1-7 road record was disastrous, but JP Pietersen now has the permanent job and an overhauled rugby structure around him. The talent has long suggested a contender. This is the year the results should begin matching it.

The URC Playoff Race Could Be Wild

Munster, Cardiff and Ulster complete the eight.

Munster's defense and forward depth should carry it through an opening stretch complicated by Jack Crowley's absence. Cardiff may regress slightly from sixth after going 8-1 at the Arms Park and 8-4 in one-score games, but its deeper squad should keep it in the postseason.

Ulster gets the final spot after improving from 14th to ninth and swinging its point differential from minus-92 to plus-74 last season. The front five and fly-half remain concerns, but the rebuild has advanced far enough that another playoff miss would be a disappointment.

Connacht is the painful omission. Stuart Lancaster's team finished last season 7-1, added Ciarán Frawley and could regain a healthy Mack Hansen, but front-five depth and a closing Sharks-Bulls trip to South Africa leave Connacht ninth.

The Lions slip to 10th after an 8-1 home record disguised a 2-6-1 road mark. Their front-five attrition and move into a brutal Champions Cup schedule add pressure. Edinburgh has playoff talent but went 0-9 against last year's eventual playoff teams. Until that changes, 11th feels safer than projecting a breakthrough.

Benetton should improve under Wayne Pivac, while Ospreys, Scarlets and Dragons all have reasons for optimism. But each still has too much ground to make up. Zebre remains the pick for 16th.

2026-27 URC Playoff Predictions

The quarterfinals start with No. 1 Leinster over No. 8 Ulster. Ulster's improvement gets it back into the postseason, but Leinster's forward depth and knockout experience make Dublin too difficult.

No. 2 Stormers beats No. 7 Cardiff. Cardiff can make this uncomfortable, but the Stormers' scrum, home advantage and overwhelming collection of attacking weapons eventually separate them.

No. 3 Bulls beats No. 6 Munster. Munster has enough defense to make this a battle, but Loftus Versfeld remains a significant advantage for a Bulls team that went 7-2 there during last year's regular season.

The hardest call is No. 4 Glasgow over No. 5 Sharks. The Sharks may have greater individual star power, but Glasgow's system and home advantage win out.

That produces Leinster-Glasgow and Stormers-Bulls semifinals.

Leinster's depth and home field earn it another final by beating Glasgow. In Cape Town, the Stormers beat the Bulls. The matchup already favored the Stormers last season, when they swept the Bulls, and adding Louw, Kolisi and Kolbe only strengthens the case.

Who Wins The 2026-27 URC Championship?

DHL Stormers.

Leinster is the safer choice over 18 rounds. The Stormers are my choice for one championship match.

They already showed their ceiling by beating Leinster 35-0 in Cape Town last season. Leinster answered when it mattered, eliminating the Stormers 20-11 in Dublin in the semifinal.

The difference this time is a Stormers team that already possessed an elite set piece and two of the URC's best performers in Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Roos adding Kolbe, Kolisi and Louw.

Leinster is the pick to be the URC's best regular-season team, but the DHL Stormers are the pick to win the 2026-27 URC championship.

The URC Holiday Matches Are Loaded!

The traditional holiday derby rounds once again headline one of the best stretches of the URC calendar.

European clubs will battle through Round 8 on Dec. 26-27 and Round 9 on Jan. 2-3 with rivalry fixtures taking center stage, including Dragons Rugby vs. Cardiff Rugby, Ospreys Rugby vs. Scarlets Rugby, Edinburgh vs. Glasgow Warriors, Ulster Rugby vs. Connacht Rugby, and Munster vs. Leinster.

Connacht also hosts Munster during New Year's weekend, while Cardiff and Ospreys renew another Welsh rivalry.

South Africa's holiday derby schedule again is adjusted because of the Guinness Six Nations window. Instead of playing in late December, the Lions host the Hollywoodbets Sharks on Feb. 20 before the Vodacom Bulls welcome the DHL Stormers on Feb. 21 as part of Round 8.

The return fixtures take place during Round 9, with the Sharks hosting the Lions on Jan. 2 and the Stormers hosting the Bulls on Jan. 3, ensuring the league's biggest South African rivalries remain part of the festive calendar despite the scheduling adjustment.

When Do The 2027 URC Playoffs Start?

The 2027 United Rugby Championship playoffs begin May 28, 2027, with the top eight teams advancing to the quarterfinals. Four quarterfinal matches will determine the semifinal field before the remaining clubs battle for a place in the championship match.

When Is The URC Grand Final?

The 2027 United Rugby Championship Grand Final will be played June 19, 2027, with the winner lifting the league trophy after an 18-round regular season and three rounds of postseason play.
