After four rounds of the United Rugby Championship 2023 season, there are three teams tied with 15 points and 3-0-1 records at the top of the standings. There are two more teams with 14 points and 3-0-1 records. 

In other words, the URC is wide open after the first month. 

Connacht Rugby lost its first match in Round 4 to fall from the top of the table, while Leinster Rugby has climbed back to the top after a Round 1 loss to Glasgow.

And most, if not all, the URC squads are about to get better with the return of international players from the 2023 Rugby World Cup. 

Only three points separate the No.1 club, Vodacom Bulls, and the No. 8 club, Edinburgh Rugby, who handed Connacht that loss. 

Meanwhile, the bottom half of the league has also been intriguing. Zebre Parma snapped its 19-month long losing streak in round four with a 12-10 win over the Hollywoodbets Sharks. The Italian club took advantage of the struggling South African club, which is missing multiple players due to the Springboks’ successful RWC run. 

Here’s a look at the URC Round 5 fixtures, including one of the matches of the week when Benetton Rugby travels to Glasgow Warriors. Another big match is in Southern Ireland as the last two URC Champions, Munster and DHL Stormers meet.

URC Matches On Friday, Nov. 17 

Ulster Rugby Vs. Emirates Lions, Kingspan Stadium

The Lions made a trip to Belfast last year and came away with a 24-23 win, but the Johannesburg club has struggled this season to a 1-0-3 record and just eight points (12th place) so far. Meanwhile, Ulster is out to a strong start with a 3-0-1 record and fourth-place spot in the standings. 

Zebre Parma Vs. Cardiff Rugby, Stadio Sergio Lanfranchi

How about a winning streak now? 

Zebre snapped their losing streak against the Sharks, who were already in 16th-place in the URC standings, last week and now host Cardiff. The Blues are sitting at 13th place. Zebre is 1-0-3 and Cardiff is also 1-0-3 but trail Zebre by two points in the standings with 7. Zebre is just three points behind eighth-place Edinburgh in the standings. 

Edinburgh Rugby Vs. Vodacom Bulls, Hive Stadium

Edinburgh Rugby scored one of the biggest wins of the season when they beat previously unbeaten and then No. 1 Connacht in Round 4. Now the The eighth-place squad hosts another team in the top spot, the Vodacom Bulls. The Bulls haven't been back to South Africa since Round 1, and this is the last game of their current European tour. They return to Loftus Versfeld next week to face Connacht.  

URC Matches On Saturday, Nov. 18 

Hollywoodbets Sharks Vs. Connacht Rugby, Hollywoodbets Kings Park

The Sharks are certainly missing star Siya Kolisi, who now plays for Racing 92 in the Top 14 league, but also their international players who played for Springboks. But at least this week they won't be missing home. The Sharks are back in Durban hosting Connacht. The Westerners will have star prop Finlay Bealham back this week, but Bundee Aki and Mack Hansen are still missing following Ireland's Rugby World Cup run. Aki is reportedly dealing with a hamstring injury, but Connacht expects Hansen back soon.

Dragon RFC Vs. Ospreys, Rodney Parade

The Ospreys may be the best chance for a Welsh team to make the 2024-2025 Investec Champions Cup, but they still sit at 10th place through four weeks. The Ospreys are 2-0-2 on the season but are only two points behind Edinburgh at No. 8 with 10 points. The Dragons have struggled and are in 15th place at 0-0-4 and just two points. 

Munster Rugby Vs. DHL Stormers, Thomond Park

The last two defending URC Champions meet in Southern Ireland at Thomond Park. The Stormers are surprising in 9th place with a 2-0-2 record and 11 points, one behind Edinburgh. Munster, meanwhile, is in 7th place, 2-1-1 with 13 points. 

Glasgow Warriors Vs. Benetton Rugby, Scotstoun Stadium

Benetton Rugby has been one of the stories of the season so far with a 3-1-0 record that includes a draw with Munster this season. Meanwhile, Glasgow has a win over Leinster at home this season and has been seemingly unstoppable in Glasgow. The Warriors are third in the standings but just one point ahead of Benetton. 

Leinsters Rugby Vs. Scarlets, RDS Arena

Leinster Rugby returned five players from the international team against the Dragons in Round 4, including star Dan Sheehan, and promptly handed the Dragons a 33-10 loss. Now they host another Welsh club looking to return to the top of the URC table. Leinster is tied with Glasgow and the Bulls with 15 points. The Scarlets are in 14th place and are 1-0-3 with six points.
