Since joining the United Rugby Championship in 2021, the DHL Stormers have been one of the best rugby teams playing in Europe. They reached back-to-back URC Grand Finals, won the championship in 2022 and went 12-2-4 in the 2023 regular season. 

And a lot of that has to do with the player the URC deemed the best in the league. 

Steven Kitshoff, the South African star who has helped the Springboks power through in the 2023 Rugby World Cup, was named the best player in the league by the URC. But the Stormers won’t have him again this season. Kitschoff is headed to Northern Ireland to play for Ulster.

However, returning to the Stormers from Racing 92 is fullback Warrick Gelant, another South African national player. 

Even with the roster changes, the Stormers, who will also compete in the Investec Champions Cup, will attempt to return to the URC Grand Final for the third straight year in 2024 and try to win its second URC Championship in three seasons. 

That journey begins at fellow South African club, the Emirates Lions, in Johannesburg during Week 1.

DHL Stormers Will Compete For The Investec Champions Cup

The Stormers will play in the Investec Champions Cup after finishing in the top-eight of the URC and winning its South African Shield last season. The Stormers reached the quarterfinals of the Champions Cup in 2023 before losing to English club Exeter 42-17.

This year, they will start Round 1 with another English club, Leicester Tigers, on Dec. 10 at 10:15 a.m. EST.

How DHL Stormers Rugby Got Its Name 

Like the three other South African clubs, the name includes a sponsor, in this case DHL, the shipping company. 

In 1997, with the help of Super 12 rule changes that helped create four new provincial clubs, the Western Stormers were created out of the Western Province Rugby Union.
