They finished 8-1-9, in 10th place, despite scoring 71 tries against 57 conceded and ending with a plus-39 points differential. The Sharks entered their final two matches already eliminated from playoff contention with a minus-35 differential, then destroyed Benetton and Zebre by a combined 100-26.

At home, they looked formidable: 7-2 with a plus-147 differential. Away, they became another team entirely, going 1-1-7 with a minus-108 differential. They beat the Stormers again in Durban and demolished Munster 45-0, but also lost both games against the Lions and were hammered 41-12 by the Bulls at Loftus.
Pietersen offers a reason to believe they might. The Sharks were 1-1-4 through their first six URC matches before he replaced John Plumtree during the season, then went 7-5 across the remaining 12.

Ethan Hooker has emerged into Springbok rugby and could form a powerful center partnership with captain André Esterhuizen. At fullback, Aphelele Fassi’s 2026-27 Japanese sabbatical creates a genuine opening for Jaco Williams or 18-year-old Zekhethelo Siyaya, who started late last season.
