BKT United Rugby Championship and Investec Champions Cup powerhouse Leinster Rugby has unveiled two significant signings ahead of the 2024-2025 season.

The team started the day with the announcement that star hooker Dan Sheehan has re-signed with the province on a two-year deal, before confirming that world-class All Black center Jordie Barrett would be joining on a short-term deal.

Both moves signal Leinster’s intent to continue its drive to be the premier club in professional rugby.

Sheehan’s re-signing is significant, as the 25-year-old is regarded as one of the best in the world at his position.

Since making his debut for Ireland in 2021, Sheehan has gone on to win 26 test caps, while scoring 10 tries in the process.

“I am delighted to commit my future to Leinster and continue my playing career in Ireland," said Sheehan, speaking about his joy at sticking with his home province. "It means an enormous amount to wear the green of Ireland and blue of Leinster, and I would like to thank all of my coaches, teammates and support staff who help foster such positive environments. It is a hugely exciting time to be playing rugby in Ireland, and I believe the best is yet to come at club and international levels in the months and years to come.”

Barrett’s signature comes following the 57-times capped All Black agreed a new deal with the New Zealand Rugby Union. In his new contract, Barrett worked in an option that would allow him to take up a short-term deal with an international club.

Having spent time in Ireland as a child, Barrett spoke of his excitement on returning to the Emerald Isle.

"It’s going to be a great place for me to develop as a rugby player in a different environment where I’ll learn so many different things," he said. "Ireland is a special place for the Barrett family. We’ve got so many great family connections in Oldcastle, in County Meath and throughout Dublin. To have an opportunity to go back and meet some family and friends and connections that were made 20 years ago is pretty cool."

Adding his weight behind the signing, Leinster Rugby head coach Leo Cullen said:

"We’re delighted that Jordie has agreed to join us after New Zealand’s tour in early December, especially as he has chosen Leinster ahead of a number of other very attractive options.

"Jordie is a 50-plus cap All Black with an outstanding skillset who has been performing at the highest level of the game for multiple seasons now. He is keen to seek out a new experience at Leinster, and I’m sure we will learn a lot from each other during his time with us.

"The Barrett family has strong connections with Ireland and Leinster, in particular, so it’s a sort of homecoming for Jordie. I’m sure all our supporters will be really excited to welcome one of the best players in the world and see up close what he brings to the team. We would also like to thank the New Zealand Rugby Union for their support with this move.
