The current heads of the table in the Gallagher Premiership and the United Rugby Championship go head-to-head on Dec. 16 in Round 2 of the Investec Champions Cup as grind that is Pool 4 continues. 

The Sale Sharks, 6-0-2 in Premiership play, faces Leinster, 6-0-1 in URC play, this week in Dublin as both look to stay undefeated in Pool 4 play of the European Championship. 

Leinster hasn’t lost a pool game in more than two years when it lost to Montpellier 28-0 on Dec. 17, 2021. Last year the Dublin powerhouse club went 4-0. 

This year the pool play set up is different. Instead of two pools, the 24 squads were divided into four pools of six with teams playing the clubs from outside their own league once. 

That sets up a showdown between the current top team in Ireland and the current top team England. 

The Sale Sharks went just 1-0-3 in pool play last season, failing to qualify for the knockout stage. They bounced back, though, eventually reaching the finals of the Gallagher Premiership before losing to Saracens, 35-25.

Leinster enters the match after finally beating La Rochelle, and this time in France, in Champions Cup play. La Rochelle had eliminated Leinster the last three years, including the last two Cup Finals. Meanwhile, Sale looked dominant in a win over Stade Francais Paris at home.

One of the most lopsided wins of the first round was extremely close at halftime. Sale led 6-5 at halftime by exploded for 22 points in the second half to win 28-5 at Salford Community Stadium.
