After both clubs opened the 2023-2024 Investec Champions Cup with losses, Round 2 became even more important for back-to-back defending champion Stade Rochelais (or La Rochelle) and South African powerhouse DHL Stormers. 

The two clubs meet trail Leicester, Sale and Leinster Rugby in the Pool 4 table (Stade Francais Paris is sixth) as the clubs hope to remain in the hunt to advance out of pool play and into the Round of 16. 

The challenge is a tough one for the defending champions. After losing on its homegrounds in Round 1 to Leinster, one of the favorites to win it all, La Rochelle now has to make the trip to Cape Town, South Africa.

Leinster Rugby finally beat La Rochelle in Champions Cup play during its Round 1 match at Stade Marcel Deflandre, winning 16-9. La Rochelle had eliminated the Dublin club the last three years in knockout rounds.

Have La Rochelle Rugby And DHL Stormers Ever Played In The Champions Cup?

No. 

For the first time ever, South African clubs were invited to play in the Champions Cup in 2022-2023 and the Stormers avoided La Rochelle last season. This will be the first meeting between the two clubs since the Stormers joined the URC in 2021 and qualified for the Champions Cup.
