WPL Teams Gear Up For Round 3

The only undefeated teams in the league square off this weekend at Treasure Island.

Life West Gladiatrix vs Berkeley All Blues

The Gladiatrix, in their first season of WPL rugby, have gotten off to a flying start, outscoring their opponents 98-26 over the course of their first two games.

Berkeley comes in having played just one game, a 29-5 home win over ORSU. They'll see a rise in difficulty this Saturday when they meet the USA-Eagle laden Life West team.

It's going to take a team effort for the All Blues to topple the Gladiatrix, but that's what the women from Berkeley do best. They play a hard, pressure defense, and share the ball well enough to manufacture tries.

For Life West, they just need to kick on from their great opening performances. If the Gladiatrix keep building, they are going to be a scary team to play. This Saturday's matchup will be another tester for them, but also another chance to grow stronger as a unit.

Players to watch

Look for Life West's Sisileti Hingano and Berkeley's Maggie Simpson as ones to watch this weekend. Both players are dangerous with ball in hand, and have a nose for the tryline.

Twin Cities Amazons vs Atlanta Harlequins

The Amazons and the Harlequins are two teams who rebounded well a week ago after rough starts to the season.

This will be the first home game for the ladies from Minnesota, who have traveled to Chicago and Boston to start the year. With a good home crowd behind them, the Amazons will be motivated to get to 2-1 on the season.

Atlanta comes in on the heels of a comfortable 25-7 win over New York. After traveling to Boston with an under-manned squad in Week 1, the Quins were able to field a full side in Week 2 and the result was a much-improved performance.

Atlanta has done a nice job of making the most of having Life University in its backyard. A good chunk of the team are former Running Eagles, and the Harlequins will hope their young studs can carry them to more victories as they move forward.

Players to watch

For the Amazons, flyhalf and USA Eagle Katana Howard is a versatile talent who brings a variety of skills to her position. When she's playing well, Twin Cities are a very strong team.

For the Harlequins, it's impossible not to mention Cortney Kuehl. The Club 7s Dream Teamer has translated that form onto the pitch thus far in the WPL. Whether she's playing No. 8 or playing center, she is a constant threat in every game.

ORSU Jesters vs San Diego Surfers

With two teams looking to get their first wins of 2019, this game here could have important implications on the standings.

The Surfers are the defending WPL champions, but after a bye week in Week 1 they suffered a home loss to Glendale in Week 2. They will not want to slide to 0-2 to begin the season, especially with fellow WPL West opponent Life West finding early success.

ORSU has to be frustrated thus far with its offensive ineptitude inside the 22. While they have faced some really tough competition in the early going, scoring just 10 points through two games is simply not gonna cut it.

The Jesters need to be more clinical. If they can tighten the screws in attack there's a chance they could give San Diego a bit of trouble.

Players to watch

For the Surfers, look out for Megan Foster. She is a player that can do it all. Whether it's kicking, scoring tries, or distributing the ball, she does it well. Foster moves to center this game, having played at flyhalf a week ago.

The player to watch on the Jesters is Te Awhina Ho Chee. The strong No. 8 is good in the carry, but also has soft hands to make nice tip passes or offloads to her teammates.

New York Rugby Club vs Chicago North Shore

North Shore laid down a mean opening statement in their first game against Twin Cities, then had the next week off. They will be eager to get back on the pitch and put in another great performance this weekend.

New York was off during Week 1, and then made the long trip to Atlanta for Week 2, where they lost a tough game to the Quins. New York brought only 18 players with them for that match, but shouldn't have that problem playing at home this go around.

New York will certainly not want to drop to 0-2 and dig themselves into a hole. A win on Sunday will be a big boost to their confidence as they move forward this season.

If the Shore can pick up another good win, they'll be 2-0 and off to a really strong start. The more a team can win together, the better the chemistry becomes, and getting off the ground with some nice early results could set Chicago on a really nice trajectory for this season.

Players to watch

Charli Jacoby for North Shore is a great player, and her time with the Eagles this summer in the Super Series will have only helped her grow even more as a player. The prop is powerful and athletic, and she brings an edge to her team.

For New York, the player they lean on is another Eagle, Alycia Washington. Tall, atheltic, and skilled with an extremely high motor, she gets a lot done around the pitch. She'll be working her butt off again on Sunday to lead her teammates from the front.
