Ronan Murphy: The Big Body On Saint Mary's

Major D1A contenders put their hands up this weekend, with a shakeup in the rankings possibly imminent.

Navy almost beat #1-ranked Life University, with a missed conversion attempt from the touchline saving Life at the end of the game. Life won 19-18, and should count themselves fortunate.

Saint Mary's unleashed a startling performance in defeating BYU in Provo 50-12. The Gaels were their champagne rugby best, moving the ball inside, and outside, and back around, and coupling that with some hard-nosed physicality.

Ronan Murphy scored two, including one of the best tries of the year.

Saint Mary's won a scrum and scrumhalf Sean Yacoubian passed out to center Tavite Lopeti, who llnked with Aaron Matthews the flyhalf.

Matthews had looped around behind Lopeti, and he then sold a dummy to skirt past one defender and then pass out to fullback Joe Yacoubian. He in turn was hit hard but smoothly caught the ball and passed out to wing Tom Brusati. He bought a little time before center Derek Ellingson looped outside his wing to take a pass.

Caught at halfway, Ellingson dished a smart pass to Matthews as he was tackled. Matthews popped back inside to scrumhalf Sean Yacoubian, who took off down to the BYU 22 before lofting a looping pass back inside for No. 8 Vili Helu to catch.

Help was tackled right after catching the ball, and simply dropped a backhanded offload to Murphy, who was on his hip, and Murphy loped 18 meters for the try.

It was a score that covered 80 meters and involved nine passes, and was simply a thing of beauty.

Not involved in that play was wing Edward King, who nonetheless caused the Cougars all sorts of problems and helped set up another flashy try later on.

This was a marker laid down by Saint Marys.

Bears Trip Bruins

Not to be outdone, Cal slammed UCLA 81-0, beating the Bruins out wide and in tight. Flyhalf Elliot Webb scored 20 points, but it was definitely a team performance.

Grand Canyon, despite being without starting fullback Dominic Iacovino due to injury, raced past San Diego State 83-10. Prop Lincoln Sii scored three tries for the 'Lopes, who improved to 4-1 and will face off with UC Davis for 2nd in the California Conference.

Cal Poly beat UCSB in a relatively close match, and Central Washington took care of the Seattle Saracens. Meanwhile, Lindenwood shut out Arkansas State in a game where capped center Lorenzo Thomas made his return from a knee injury.

Thomas set up the final try of the day.

"We really defended well," said Lindenwood head coach Josh Macy. "Defended our butts off, were really patient, and forced some turnovers when we were meant to."

As for FloRugby's picks for the week, we were dead-on for one game (Cal Poly by 19 over UCSB), and correct in picking all of the winners. But Cal and Saint Mary's produced some results that show they are the class of the West.
