OMBAC remains undefeated in Pacific Rugby Premiership action after defeating SFGG in rainy conditions in San Diego on Saturday.

Once again, some crucial goalkicking from fullback Michael Dillon helped Old Mission Beach Athletic Club put the home side through 28-14.

A kick and break put OMBAC near the SFGG line early, and while the host side wasn't able to get the try, SFGG was penalized and Dillon had little trouble with the kick to stake his team to a 3-0 lead.

SFGG replied well, powering through the phases and testing the OMBAC defense. But then OMBAC prop Jed Gillespie ripped the ball free while making a tackle and that set up wing Tim Stanfill, who raced 70 meters for an OMBAC try.

OMBAC added a long-range penalty goal from Dillon to make it 13-0. But after that, SFGG opened it up and fullback Isimeli Ratumaimuri set up Brendan Daly for the newly capped captain's try. Scrumhalf Colby Stevens converted to make it a 13-7 OMBAC lead.

After that, both teams had promising breaks only to see the cover defenses, and maybe a little overeagerness, stop the attack.

SFGG finally did manage to get over for a second try, with No. 8 Akuila Uaisele picking up and going over from short range. Stevens converted and SFGG led 14-13.

That lead would hold until halftime.

"I thought we composed ourselves well and had the momentum in the latter part of the half," SFGG head coach Neil Foote said. "But in the second half OMBAC controlled the territory a lot better. We struggled to get any good field position, and when we did their defensive effort was outstanding."

In the second half, OMBAC took advantage of SFGG indiscipline to take a lineout and maul it over — Gillespie doing the honors of touching the ball down. Dillon converted for the 20-14 lead.

Then Gillespie got involved again, sending the final pass to hooker Oliva Auimatagi on the wing to score in the corner. Dillon added a penalty late.

That finished it off. Flanker Shane Moise was named the player of the game for OMBAC, which remains atop the PRP at 4-0. SFGG, meanwhile, sits third overall with a 2-2 mark.

"It's always tough against a powerhouse like Gate," OMBAC player-coach Tai Tuisamoa said. "It was even tougher with the rain. The boys just kept fighting and the ball just happened to bounce our way. Our forward pack carried us the whole way, as it has so far this season."
