The attack already looks playoff-caliber. The question is whether Racing can defend better, survive a nomadic home schedule and become more consistent away from home. If so, another top-six finish is realistic. A genuine title challenge still looks a step beyond the most likely outcome.
What Has To Change For Racing 92 In 2026-27?
Defense is the clearest issue.
Racing scored 828 regular-season points, third-most in the Top 14, but conceded 723 points and 91 tries. Its 4-1-8 away record also contrasted sharply with a 12-0-1 record in home-designated matches.
The 33-31 playoff victory at Pau proved Racing can win a major road match. The semifinal showed it cannot yet reproduce that level consistently against the championship's best.
New defense coach Julian Salvi inherits the most obvious area for improvement.
Did Racing 92 Get Better This Offseason?
Slightly — but not decisively.
Paul Costes brings considerable upside at center, while Seru Uru adds lock/back-row versatility. Nicolas Martins strengthens the back row, Benjamin Boudou adds another hooker and Maxime Machenaud provides experience behind 21-year-old scrum-half Léo Carbonneau.
But Gaël Fickou's move to Toulon removes an experienced international center and important defensive presence. Will Rowlands and Feleti Kaitu'u also departed.
The encouraging part is continuity around Carbonneau, Maxime Baudonne, Max Spring and Shingirai Manyarara. Racing is adding around its younger core rather than replacing it.
What Could Decide Racing 92's Season?
Carbonneau's continued development is central. He started 25 matches last season, scored seven tries and led the Top 14 in kicking volume and territory gained from kicking.
Defense is the larger team variable. Even modest improvement could make Racing considerably harder to eliminate.
Then there is home advantage. Racing will use multiple venues before eventually returning to Stade Yves-du-Manoir. Maintaining last season's extraordinary home results without one consistent home ground could determine whether Racing finishes comfortably inside the six or lands in the postseason fight.
