Lyon OU enters 2026-27 with a clearer path forward but little margin for another stagnant season. LOU has finished 11th three consecutive years, including an 11-1-14 campaign in 2025-26 that left it 19 points outside the Top 6.

A successful season means more than simply climbing a few places. Lyon needs to become a genuine playoff challenger. The roster is stronger in several targeted areas, but the evidence still points to a team with something to prove before it can be trusted as a Top 6 finisher.
What Has To Change For Lyon In 2026-27?
Lyon must stop spending so much of matches defending.
LOU made a Top 14-high 3,949 successful tackles last season, or 151 per match. That reflected impressive work rate, but also how often Lyon ceded possession and territory.
The road record was equally damaging. Lyon went 3-10 away compared with 8-1-4 at Gerland. Until that gap closes, a playoff place will remain difficult.
Did Lyon Get Better This Offseason?
Probably, but not dramatically enough to erase every concern.
Thomas Gallo was the headline addition to a front row Lyon deliberately strengthened, while Opeti Helu and Tim Hoyt added tighthead depth. Sanele Nohamba gives Baptiste Couilloud meaningful support at scrum-half, and Adrien Séguret returns at center.
The major loss is lock Killian Géraci.
There is also a longer-term youth push, with Fousseynou Cissokho returning from loan and eight academy players moving into the professional structure. Karim Ghezal remains in charge, providing coaching continuity.
The problem is health. Gallo, Helu and Hoyt all carried preseason injury concerns, while Avé Maalo dislocated his shoulder.
What Could Decide Lyon's Season?
First, the front-row rebuild must actually stay available. Lyon specifically invested there to improve depth and first-phase possession.
Second, Couilloud and Léo Berdeu need continuity. Both endured injury disruptions last season, and Lyon's ability to control matches improves significantly if its preferred halfbacks play together regularly.
Finally, LOU must turn its attacking talent into more sustained production. Jiuta Wainiqolo scored 16 tries in 16 appearances despite Lyon's possession problems.
Lyon OU 2026-27 Season Prediction
- REGULAR-SEASON PREDICTION: 7th.
- PLAYOFF PREDICTION: Lyon narrowly misses the Top 6.
- TOP 14 TITLE PREDICTION: No.
- EUROPEAN PREDICTION: Challenge Cup knockout qualification, with potential to make a deeper run.
MOST LIKELY OUTCOME: Clear improvement from 11th, but just short of the playoffs.
CEILING: Sixth place and a Top 14 playoff berth.
FLOOR: Another lower-middle-table finish.
WHAT COULD MAKE THIS PREDICTION WRONG: A healthy front row, sustained Couilloud-Berdeu partnership and improved away form could push Lyon into the Top 6.
LOU should be better in 2026-27. The prediction, however, is progress without quite completing the jump.
