Montpellier Herault Rugby enters 2026-27 with expectations created by results, not reputation. MHR finished second in the Top 14 regular season, reached the championship match and won the EPCR Challenge Cup.

Real progress now means sustaining that level and finding the small improvements required to turn a finalist into a champion. Montpellier Hérault Rugby already proved it can score with anyone. The harder question is whether it can become complete enough to win the Top 14.
What Has To Change For Montpellier In 2026-27?
Defense and consistency remain the clearest obstacles.
Montpellier scored 824 points and 101 tries during the 2025-26 Top 14 regular season but conceded 587 points and 69 tries. That imbalance mattered because MHR's attacking power could not ultimately carry it past Toulouse in a 28-20 final.
Away performance also remains worth watching. Road form had been a weakness in 2024-25, although the 36-33 playoff victory at Castres provided evidence Montpellier could handle that pressure.
For MHR to take the next step, it cannot rely on outscoring every problem.
Did Montpellier Get Better This Offseason?
On paper, yes.
Adam Hastings adds another experienced fly-half option, while Sébastien Bézy strengthens scrum-half depth after Léo Coly's departure. Reda Wardi reinforces the front row, Ruben van Heerden adds a lineout and maul presence at lock, and Dimitri Delibes brings versatility across the backline.
Montpellier also lost Marco Tauleigne, Nika Abuladze and Thomas Vincent, so this was not simply accumulation.
The larger advantage is continuity. Joan Caudullo remains head coach for a third season, with Bernard Laporte continuing as director of rugby. MHR can refine an established identity rather than install another one.
What Could Decide Montpellier's Season?
The first swing factor is whether the defense gets closer to the level of the attack. Montpellier already has a proven scoring formula built around forward power, set piece and an expansive game off quick possession.
The second is halfback competition. Domingo Miotti was Montpellier's leading Top 14 points scorer last season, while Hastings and Bézy give Caudullo additional options in controlling matches.
Finally, depth could matter. Langi Gleeson suffered a knee injury in January 2026 and had an uncertain recovery timetable entering the season, while developing players such as Luca Tabarot could become increasingly important during a long campaign.
Montpellier 2026-27 Season Prediction
- REGULAR-SEASON PREDICTION: Top four.
- PLAYOFF PREDICTION: Semifinal or final.
- TOP 14 TITLE PREDICTION: Serious contender, but not the most likely champion.
- EUROPEAN PREDICTION: Champions Cup knockout contention.
MOST LIKELY OUTCOME: Montpellier reaches the Top 14 semifinals and remains in the championship conversation deep into the season.
CEILING: Top 14 champion.
FLOOR: Playoff-bubble team.
WHAT COULD MAKE THIS PREDICTION WRONG: A major defensive improvement combined with immediate impact from the new recruits could make MHR better than last season.
Montpellier belongs among the contenders entering Top 14 2026-27. The next climb is no longer toward relevance. It is from contender to champion.
