RC Toulonnais has enough talent to erase the disappointment of 2025-26, but predicting a championship requires more than admiring its roster.

Toulon finished ninth at 12-1-13, missing the playoffs while conceding 820 points against 714 scored. The offseason brought significant reinforcements, and a return to the Top 14 playoffs is realistic.

A Brennus Shield run is possible, but Toulon enters 2026-27 with too many unanswered questions to be considered a likely champion.

What Has To Change For Toulon In 2026-27?

Consistency must replace volatility.

Toulon could beat La Rochelle 39-14 and Clermont 41-13 last season, yet also suffered heavy defeats against Toulouse, Stade Français and Clermont. Its 103 tries conceded were particularly damaging.

The talent to produce elite performances existed. The ability to reproduce them did not.

Toulon's path toward contention therefore begins defensively and extends to controlling matches when its attack cannot overwhelm opponents.

Did Toulon Get Better This Offseason?

Yes, although one important uncertainty remains.

Gaël Fickou and Huw Jones give Toulon a potentially transformative midfield. Rabah Slimani strengthens the front row, while Judicaël Cancoriet adds another physical forward and lineout option.

But Paolo Garbisi's departure for Perpignan creates uncertainty at fly-half. Antoine Frisch and Thomas Albornoz are among Toulon's options there.

The overall squad looks stronger. Whether it is better constructed for knockout rugby will depend heavily on how Toulon replaces Garbisi's playmaking role.

What Could Decide Toulon's Season?

Halfback stability: Baptiste Serin remains crucial at scrum-half, but Toulon needs a dependable combination at 9-10 to connect its powerful forwards with Fickou, Jones and the outside backs.

Forward dominance: Charles Ollivon, Zach Mercer and David Ribbans anchor a deep pack, while Slimani joins front-row options including Jean-Baptiste Gros, Kyle Sinckler and Beka Gigashvili. Improved scrum consistency could turn that depth into a major advantage.

Defense and availability: Toulon's 820 points conceded cannot be repeated by a championship challenger. Injuries also could affect depth, with Lewis Ludlam and Marius Domon carrying significant injury concerns into the season.

RC Toulon 2026-27 Season Prediction

  • REGULAR-SEASON PREDICTION: 6th
  • PLAYOFF PREDICTION: Qualifies for the Top 14 playoffs but does not reach the Final.
  • TOP 14 TITLE PREDICTION: Toulon does not win the Brennus Shield.
  • EUROPEAN PREDICTION: Challenge Cup knockout contender.

MOST LIKELY OUTCOME: A meaningful improvement from ninth place and a return to Top 14 postseason rugby.

CEILING: Top-four finish and a run to the Top 14 Final.

FLOOR: Eighth or ninth, missing the playoffs again.

WHAT COULD MAKE THIS PREDICTION WRONG: If the new midfield clicks immediately, Toulon solves fly-half and its defense improves dramatically, this roster has enough quality to exceed a sixth-place prediction.

RC Toulon is ready to return to the playoff conversation. It is capable of challenging for the Brennus Shield, but it has not yet shown enough consistency to predict that it will win it.
