That reversal changed the question around the club. Bayonne has already shown it can reach the upper end of the table. Now it must prove that level was sustainable rather than temporary.
Can Bayonne Rebound From Its 2025-26 Collapse?
Bayonne started last season 8-5 through 13 rounds and even led the Top 14 after five rounds, but the second half unraveled. The club went 3-10 over its final 13 league games and changed coaches in February, with Gérard Fraser taking greater responsibility alongside director of rugby Laurent Travers.
The central task is restoring week-to-week stability after a season in which Bayonne's attack remained productive but the overall structure broke down.
Did Bayonne Do Enough In The Transfer Market?
The roster is deeper after an aggressive offseason.
Léo Coly arrives as the likely first-choice scrum-half, while Guillaume Cramont strengthens hooker. Killian Géraci and Brian Alainu'uese reinforce the second row, Rob du Preez adds another playmaking option and Madosh Tambwe gives Bayonne another strike runner out wide.
There were meaningful departures, including Maxime Machenaud and Alex Moon, but the overall squad appears stronger entering 2026-27.
Can Bayonne Fix Its Defense And Discipline?
This is the issue most likely to determine the ceiling.
Bayonne conceded 869 points and 113 tries last season while receiving 29 yellow cards and two reds. The club averaged roughly 33.4 points allowed per league match.
Its attack scored 94 tries, so the problem was not creating enough offense. Unless Fraser's staff can improve defensive consistency and reduce the disciplinary damage, Bayonne's attacking talent may again be wasted.
Can Stade Jean-Dauger Become A Fortress Again?
Bayonne still finished 8-4 in Top 14 games played specifically at Jean-Dauger, but the season changed when Castres ended a nearly two-year league unbeaten run there in January.
Racing 92, Pau and Bordeaux-Bègles later won at the stadium as well.
That matters because Bayonne's away form was disastrous: 2-11 with a minus-228 road point differential. A playoff push probably requires both rebuilding the home advantage and becoming far more competitive away.
Is Bayonne Really A Top-Six Team?
There is enough talent to make that question legitimate.
Tom Spring scored 13 league tries last season, Esteban Capilla scored 10 in 16 appearances and Joris Segonds produced 222 points. Sireli Maqala, Mateo Carreras and Manu Tuilagi remain part of a dangerous backline, while Coly's arrival could improve the connection between the pack and those attacking weapons.
Bayonne's realistic ceiling is a return to the Top 14 playoffs. Its 2024-25 semifinal run showed that level is possible. The 12th-place finish that followed showed it has not yet become permanent.
The 2026-27 season will determine whether Aviron Bayonnais has truly established itself among the Top 14's upper tier — or still has another step to take.
