Castres scored 81 league tries and produced significant victories at La Rochelle, Bayonne and Munster, but inconsistency overwhelmed those highlights. An 11-15 league record, 751 points conceded and a dramatic home-away split left Xavier Sadourny's side outside the playoffs one year after finishing sixth.

Can Castres Fix Its Road Problems?
Nothing explains Castres' 2025-26 decline better than its away record.
Castres went 8-5 at Stade Pierre-Fabre but just 3-10 away, where it was outscored 450-264. Heavy defeats at Toulouse, Clermont, Bordeaux-Bègles and Racing 92 exposed a defense that conceded 96 league tries overall.
A playoff return probably begins with simply becoming more competitive outside Castres.
Dalton Papali'i's Injury Changes Castres' Offseason
Dalton Papali'i was supposed to headline the rebuild. Instead, the former All Blacks captain ruptured his Achilles and is expected to miss roughly six months.
Castres responded by signing veteran Scotland flanker and British & Irish Lion Hamish Watson. Along with Alex Burin, Chris Gabriel and Kyllian Ringuet, Watson strengthens a forward group that could become particularly deep if Papali'i returns for the second half of the campaign.
Can The Castres Defense Catch Up?
Castres demonstrated that attack was not its primary problem. It scored 660 league points and 81 tries, while Christian Ambadiang had 10 tries in 16 appearances by early April.
The defense was another matter.
Fabrice Estebanez now oversees defense and contact after Castres allowed 751 points. If that number drops substantially, the club's existing attacking threat becomes much more meaningful.
Louis Le Brun Faces A Bigger Role At Fly-Half
Pierre Popelin's departure to Vannes and Enzo Hervé's loan to Montauban leave Louis Le Brun and Théo Vidal as Castres' two listed fly-halves.
Vidal arrives after being named the best player in the 2025-26 National championship, but he has not played Top 14 rugby.
That makes Le Brun's form and availability especially important over a demanding season.
Can Stade Pierre-Fabre Drive Another Playoff Push?
Castres' home advantage remains central to its competitiveness.
The club outscored opponents 396-301 at Stade Pierre-Fabre last season, but five visiting teams still won there. Improving an 8-5 home record while finding additional road victories offers Castres its clearest route back into the top six.
Castres should enter 2026-27 as a legitimate playoff challenger rather than a championship favorite. The pack looks deeper, the attack has proven scorers and Papali'i could become a major second-half addition. But unless the defense and road form improve, Castres risks remaining in the Top 14's crowded middle rather than returning to the postseason.
