Top 5 Section Paloise Storylines Entering The 2026-27 Top 14 Season

Section Paloise changed expectations in 2025-26. Pau climbed from eighth to a club-best fourth in the Top 14, won 17 matches and reached the playoffs for the first time since returning to the competition in 2015.

The question now is whether that breakthrough can become Pau's new standard. With an explosive young backline, Argentina captain Julián Montoya at hooker and reinforcements arriving for the pack, Section Paloise enters 2026-27 with legitimate reasons to believe it can remain in the playoff picture.

How Will Pau Handle Julián Montoya's International Absences?

Montoya gives Pau something particularly valuable in a young, developing squad: an elite international leader in the middle of the front row.

The 32-year-old Argentina captain has 117 caps and started 13 of his 15 Top 14 appearances during his first season with Pau after joining from Leicester Tigers.

His importance also creates an availability question. International obligations can take Montoya away from Pau, making the club's ability to manage periods without its starting hooker an important storyline during a long Top 14 campaign.

Can Section Paloise Prove Fourth Place Wasn't A One-Off?

Pau's 2025-26 performance dramatically raised expectations.

Section Paloise finished fourth with 78 points after placing eighth the previous season. Its playoff debut ended with a 33-31 loss to Racing 92, leaving Pau tantalizingly close to extending its breakthrough.

Another top-six challenge would demonstrate that Pau has moved into a different competitive tier. A significant regression would reopen the question of whether 2025-26 represented an exceptional season rather than sustainable progress.

Did Pau Build A Pack Capable Of Matching The Top 14's Best?

Pau scored 817 points and 98 tries last season, but forward power and the set piece remained concerns.

Montoya provides an accomplished centerpiece at hooker. Pau then reinforced around its existing forwards by adding Baptiste Pesenti, Bastien Vergnes-Taillefer and Santiago Grondona.

Those additions could be crucial. Pau already has the attacking talent to hurt opponents. Becoming more difficult to overpower up front could change its ceiling.

How Much Better Can Pau's Young Core Become?

The exciting part of Pau's rise is how much of it has been driven by developing talent.

Emilien Gailleton scored 11 tries in 26 games last season, while Théo Attissogbe, Fabien Brau-Boirie and Grégory Arfeuil are part of a dynamic group of backs.

There is more coming. Joachim Senga Kouo and Rémi Couty represent another wave of young talent. Continued development could allow Pau to improve without fundamentally rebuilding its roster.

Can Pau Turn Stade Du Hameau Dominance Into A Deeper Playoff Run?

Thirteen of Pau's 17 victories last season came at Stade du Hameau.

That home advantage provides a powerful foundation, but Pau's next step requires more. The narrow playoff defeat to Racing illustrated the margins Section Paloise must master if it wants to progress beyond merely qualifying.

That connects all five storylines. Pau has Montoya's experience, a reinforced pack, emerging young talent and one of its greatest advantages at the Hameau. If those pieces translate into greater consistency when the margins tighten, another top-six finish is realistic — and a Top 14 semifinal is within Pau's 2026-27 ceiling.
