Union Bordeaux Begles enters the Top 14 2026-27 season with a contradiction to resolve. UBB has won consecutive Champions Cups, yet its most recent domestic campaign ended without a playoff appearance.

Bordeaux finished eighth in 2025-26, one point outside the top six, despite leading the Top 14 with 822 points and 113 tries.
For UBB rugby, the next step is clear: turn European supremacy and extraordinary attacking potential into sustained success in France.
Can UBB Finally Turn European Success Into Top 14 Success?
Bordeaux has already crossed one championship threshold.
UBB won its first major trophy with the 2025 Champions Cup and successfully defended the title in 2026. Yet the Brennus Shield remains missing.
Last season demonstrated the disconnect. Bordeaux could beat Toulouse 44-20 but still finish 14-12 and outside the playoffs.
UBB 2026-27 will be defined largely by whether Bordeaux can produce its best rugby consistently enough to become a domestic championship force.
Can Bordeaux's Attack Win In Different Ways?
The numbers were remarkable: 822 points and 113 tries, both Top 14 highs.
Matthieu Jalibert directs an attack featuring Damian Penaud and Yoram Moefana, while Cameron Woki and Marko Gazzotti provide attacking contributions from the pack.
But Bordeaux also conceded 90 tries.
The question is what happens when opponents slow UBB down. Championship ambitions could depend upon Bordeaux becoming as comfortable controlling tight matches as it is opening them up.
Did UBB Add The Forward Depth It Needed?
Bordeaux's offseason recruitment targeted the pack.
Tom Willis arrives as a back-row option, Alex Moon strengthens the locks and Lasha Pkhakadze adds front-row depth. Dan du Plessis brings another option to the midfield.
Those additions matter because UBB again must balance the demands of Top 14 rugby and European competition.
Bordeaux already had the attacking weapons. Strengthening the platform underneath them could determine whether its domestic results improve.
Can UBB Survive The International Windows?
Having international-caliber talent creates another problem: sometimes that talent isn't available.
Jalibert, Woki, Penaud and Moefana are among the players whose international commitments could affect UBB during portions of the season.
That puts pressure on Bordeaux's depth and younger players. Teenage wings Thomas Delpeuch and Hugo Avogadro arrive after playing in Pro D2, while 24-year-old back-rower Tiaan Jacobs could earn a larger role.
Those weeks could prove crucial in a league where UBB missed the playoffs by one point last season.
Can Stade Chaban-Delmas Become UBB's Championship Foundation?
Few clubs can match the scale of Bordeaux rugby's home support.
Stade Chaban-Delmas holds approximately 32,930 for rugby, and UBB had recorded 30 consecutive home sellouts by spring 2026. Bordeaux won eight of 13 home league matches last season.
Turning that support into even greater home dominance could be critical.
Union Bordeaux-Bègles has established its European credentials. The five storylines now converge around a harder question: Can UBB become consistent enough across an entire Top 14 season to establish itself alongside France's very best?
