That contradiction defines Bordeaux entering the new season. UBB has championship talent. Now it must show it can consistently challenge Toulouse for supremacy in French rugby.
How Did Union Bordeaux-Bègles Do In 2025-26?
Few teams better demonstrated the difficulty of balancing the Top 14 and Champions Cup than Bordeaux last season.
UBB finished eighth in the Top 14 at 14-12 with 70 points, one point short of the playoff places. Bordeaux scored a league-high 822 points and 113 tries while conceding 719 points and 90 tries.
Those numbers captured both sides of UBB.
At its best, Bordeaux could overwhelm virtually anyone. Its 44-20 victory over Toulouse at Stade Chaban-Delmas, which included six tries and an attacking bonus point, showed exactly how dangerous UBB could become when its attack found rhythm.
Maintaining that level across the Top 14's 26-round regular season proved much more difficult.
Bordeaux lost 45-15 to La Rochelle and dropped tight matches against Montpellier and Stade Français. UBB won eight of its 13 home games but could not accumulate enough points to reach the postseason.

What's New For Union Bordeaux-Bègles In 2026-27?
UBB did not react to its eighth-place finish with a rebuild.
Instead, Bordeaux reinforced specific areas while maintaining continuity around head coach Yannick Bru, whose contract has been extended through 2029, and Jalibert, who is signed through 2028.
Tom Willis arrives from Saracens and should strengthen an already talented back row. Alex Moon adds another experienced option at lock, while Dan du Plessis brings experience and physicality to the midfield.
Georgian prop Lasha Pkhakadze adds front-row depth.

Bordeaux's established wing talent makes opportunities difficult to earn, but the club has added two intriguing young options.
Thomas Delpeuch scored four tries in nine appearances for Aurillac in Pro D2 during 2025-26 before joining UBB at 19. Hugo Avogadro, also 19, arrives from Grenoble after nine Pro D2 appearances and two tries.
International windows could become particularly important for their development. Bordeaux's collection of French internationals means Bru will need alternatives during portions of the season.
Tiaan Jacobs also is worth watching in the back row. At 24, his physical carrying provides another option in a position group that will need to withstand the demands of simultaneous Top 14 and Champions Cup campaigns.

There may not be a more frightening collection of attacking talent in the Top 14.
Bordeaux led the competition with 822 points and 113 tries last season. Its European numbers were similarly impressive, with UBB leading the Champions Cup in points, tries, meters gained and clean breaks.
Bielle-Biarrey's presence adds another dimension to those numbers.
Defenses cannot simply compress around Jalibert or devote additional resources toward Penaud. Bordeaux can threaten multiple areas of the field simultaneously, while powerful midfield runners such as Yoram Moefana can challenge defenses closer to the gain line.
The system is particularly dangerous in transition.

Turnover possession creates disorganized defensive structures, and few circumstances are more favorable for a team with Bordeaux's speed outside. Jalibert can identify space quickly, while Bielle-Biarrey and Penaud possess the finishing ability to make a defensive mistake decisive.
But UBB is not merely a collection of backs.
The research credited Bordeaux with a 98% scrum success rate and 91% lineout success during its 2025 Champions Cup campaign. UBB also forced 75 turnovers, the most in that tournament.
That forward platform is essential to understanding the attack.
The bigger question comes when opponents remove those opportunities.
