Some moves were about replacing departed stars. Others were clear statements of intent from clubs looking to challenge for the Gallagher PREM title. Newcastle Red Bulls rebuilt virtually their entire squad after a last-place finish, Sale Sharks landed one of the league's strongest recruiting classes and Saracens immediately backed new director of rugby Brendan Venter with several marquee additions.
While dozens of players changed clubs, a handful of signings stand above the rest because of their ability to reshape the title race, transform struggling teams or fill enormous voids at clubs with championship aspirations.
10. Aaron Wainwright — Dragons To Leicester Tigers
Leicester Tigers wanted to become more physical after narrowly missing last season's final, and Aaron Wainwright gives them exactly that. The Wales international brings experience, work rate and leadership to a Tigers pack that also added Mako Vunipola and Joel Sclavi. Replacing George Martin won't be easy, but Wainwright helps soften that blow.
9. Jac Morgan — Ospreys To Gloucester Rugby
Few signings could elevate a club's ceiling more than Jac Morgan joining Gloucester. One of the world's premier flankers, Morgan immediately becomes the centerpiece of a forward pack that also welcomes Dewi Lake, Jean Kleyn and Joe Joyce. Gloucester may have had the best overall transfer window in the Premiership.
8. George Martin — Leicester Tigers To Saracens
Saracens rarely miss opportunities to strengthen their pack, and adding England international George Martin continues that tradition. Martin replaces some of the physical presence lost through recent departures and gives Brendan Venter another elite building block as he begins his tenure as director of rugby.
7. George Furbank — Northampton Saints To Harlequins
Perhaps no transfer changes two clubs more than this one. Harlequins gain one of England's premier attacking fullbacks, while defending champion Northampton Saints must replace its longtime captain and backfield leader. Furbank's arrival also gives Robbie Deans a proven international centerpiece as Harlequins begin a new era.
6. Tomos Williams — Gloucester Rugby To Saracens
One of the Premiership's most dangerous scrum-halves now joins one of England's most successful clubs. Williams' pace, vision and creativity should fit perfectly into Saracens' attack while providing immediate experience following Ivan van Zyl's departure.
5. Christ Tshiunza — Exeter Chiefs To Sale Sharks
Sale already possessed one of the league's most physical forward packs, and adding Christ Tshiunza only raises its ceiling. Still just 24, the Wales international can play lock or flanker and gives Alex Sanderson another versatile international capable of changing matches on both sides of the ball.
4. Courtney Lawes — Brive To Sale Sharks
Even at 37, Courtney Lawes remains one of rugby's most respected leaders. The former England captain brings championship experience, lineout expertise and unmatched professionalism to a Sale side that clearly believes it can return to title contention immediately.
3. Hoskins Sotutu — Blues To Newcastle Red Bulls
Newcastle's rebuilding project begins with perhaps the biggest signing in club history. Hoskins Sotutu arrives as one of Super Rugby's elite No. 8s and instantly becomes the centerpiece of a roster that added more than 30 new players this offseason. If Newcastle climbs the standings, Sotutu will likely be at the center of the turnaround.
2. Joe Marchant — Stade Français To Sale Sharks
Joe Marchant's return to English rugby could prove to be one of the smartest pieces of business this summer. Still in his prime, the England international gives Sale another dynamic playmaker in midfield while strengthening a backline that already looked dangerous entering the new campaign.
