Those rivalries may be even more important this season following one of the biggest transfer windows in URC history. The DHL Stormers strengthened an already talented squad by bringing home Springbok stars Siya Kolisi and Cheslin Kolbe, creating what many believe could become the league's newest super team. The Vodacom Bulls remain perennial title contenders after reaching multiple URC finals, while the Sharks continue to boast one of the deepest rosters in the competition. The Lions, meanwhile, have steadily emerged as one of South Africa's rising clubs after reaching the playoffs last season.
Unlike the European derby rounds, South Africa's festive fixtures are split between late December, early January and February because the Guinness Six Nations occupies much of the traditional holiday schedule. The result is a season-long rivalry calendar featuring some of the URC's biggest matches.

South Africa's famous North-South Derby is once again among the marquee fixtures of the URC season.The first meeting comes in Round 8 on Feb. 21, when the Vodacom Bulls host the DHL Stormers at Loftus Versfeld. The return fixture follows in Round 9 on Jan. 3, with the Stormers hosting the Bulls at DHL Stadium in Cape Town.
With Siya Kolisi and Cheslin Kolbe joining the Stormers, these matches could be among the biggest of the entire URC campaign.
Hollywoodbets Sharks Vs. Lions
The rivalry between the Sharks and Lions begins in Round 8 on Feb. 20, when the Lions host the Sharks at Ellis Park.
The teams meet again in Round 9 on Jan. 2, with the Sharks hosting the Lions at Hollywoodbets Kings Park.
Hollywoodbets Sharks Vs. Vodacom Bulls
Two South African heavyweights square off for the first time in Round 7 on Dec. 19, when the Sharks host the Bulls in Durban.
The return fixture comes in Round 12 on Feb. 27, with the Bulls hosting the Sharks at Loftus Versfeld in another matchup that could influence the race for playoff seeding.
DHL Stormers Vs. Lions
The Stormers host the Lions in Round 7 on Dec. 19 before the rivalry shifts to Johannesburg in Round 12 on Feb. 27, when the Lions welcome the Stormers to Ellis Park.
DHL Stormers Vs. Hollywoodbets Sharks
The coastal rivals meet for the first time in Round 3 on Oct. 10, with the Stormers hosting the Sharks in Cape Town. Their second meeting comes during Round 6 on Dec. 5, when the Sharks host the Stormers in Durban.
Vodacom Bulls Vs. Lions
The Gauteng rivals face off twice during the regular season.
The first derby takes place in Round 3 on Oct. 10, when the Bulls host the Lions at Loftus Versfeld. The return meeting follows in Round 6 on Dec. 5, when the Lions host the Bulls at Ellis Park.
When Do The 2027 URC Playoffs Start?
The 2027 United Rugby Championship playoffs begin May 28, 2027, with the top eight teams advancing to the quarterfinals before the semifinals determine the finalists.
When Is The URC Grand Final?
The 2027 United Rugby Championship Grand Final will be played on June 19, 2027, crowning the league champion following the conclusion of the 18-round regular season and three rounds of playoffs.
