How tough is the Top 14? The back-to-back European champions couldn’t even qualify for its domestic league’s playoffs. There can be arguments later about which professional rugby league is the best in the world, but that conversation certainly starts in France.

And, of course, that club is Toulouse, which is attempting to do something the Tom Brady-led New England Patriots never did, nor the Michael Jordan-era Chicago Bulls, nor even the Derek Jeter-led Yankees.
Toulouse is trying to four-peat in the Top 14 when it faces Montpellier in Paris at 3 p.m. ET on June 27. Led by Antoine Dupont and a host of other international rugby stars, Toulouse faces one of the hottest rugby clubs of the last six months. The 2026 EPCR Challenge Cup champions, MHR has roared back to prominence in Top 14 play.
Winners of 11 straight matches, MHR has lost just twice since the calendar flipped to 2026. Unfortunately for Montpellier, the winning streak started after a 45-29 loss to Toulouse on the road in March.
Toulouse’s season started without Dupont, who was recovering from an ACL injury and didn’t debut until December. Even without the best scrumhalf of his generation, Toulouse managed to win the Top 14 title last summer. But in the 2025-2026 Champions Cup, Toulouse lost both road pool-play matches before losing in the quarterfinals to rival Bordeaux, 30-15. Bordeaux went on to win the European championship, but lost on the final day of the Top 14 season and missed the playoffs completely.
Having clinched the Top 14's top playoff spot early, Toulouse may have lost twice in the final three weeks of the regular season, but a 71-17 rugby clinic over Racing 92 in the semifinal may have put an end to any Toulouse doubts.
MHR beat the other Parisian club, Stade Français, in the semifinal, 25-15, to set up a classic matchup.
Toulouse finished atop the table with an 18-0-8 record and 86 points. MHR was second with a 17-1-8 record and 82 points.
Why The Top 14 Is A Must-Watch Rugby Match
Last year’s Toulouse-Bordeaux Top 14 Final was a rematch of the 2024 final, and it will go down as one of the best club rugby matches ever. It was between the previous two Investec Champions Cup winners, and it took 100 minutes to declare a champion. Toulouse won 39-33.
This year could set up for similar drama.
Back in September, MHR beat Toulouse 44-14. That was seemingly a different Toulouse club back then, and the winningest professional club rugby program in the world won the rematch 45-29.

Toulouse Rugby Adding To Its Legacy
Stade Toulousain is seeking a quarter-century of Top 14 titles. Yes, a win would be its 25th title. Since the professional era, Toulouse has won 12 Top 14 championships. Toulouse has even done a four-peat before, winning the title from 1994-97. But it has never done it completely in the professional era of rugby (1995-96 season onward).
For American sports fans, the last team from any of the major leagues to win four straight championships was the New York Islanders in the NHL. And that was more than 40 years ago (1980-83).
