For Tinus de Beer, this weekend’s BKT URC clash with the Vodacom Bulls carries extra meaning.
It was with the Pretoria-based province that the Dragons fly-half began his rugby journey more than a decade ago. Now, he’s set to face them at Rodney Parade — a full-circle moment in a season where his influence has been unmistakable.
Linked with a return to the Bulls earlier this year, De Beer instead stayed in Wales and has become central to the Dragons’ resurgence. The 30-year-old has featured in all but two matches this season and helped guide the side to the EPCR Challenge Cup semifinals with impressive road wins over Stade Français and Zebre Parma.

Head coach Filo Tiatia has been quick to highlight his value.
“He’s been outstanding on and off the field,” said the former All Black. “He’s tough, highly skilled and a natural leader. He demands a lot from the group.”
Chief executive Rhys Blumberg echoed that sentiment, calling De Beer a “fantastic influence” within the squad.
Born and raised in Pretoria, De Beer came through the Bulls system and represented South Africa at Schools and U20 level before spells with the Griquas and Pumas. A move to Wales followed in 2023 with Cardiff, where he made 30 appearances and scored 175 points.
Last summer, he made a much shorter move — just 16 miles — to join the Dragons, a decision shaped in part by family life after becoming a father.
“I wanted to keep things simple,” he said. “The URC is one of the best competitions in the world, and I love the challenge it brings.”
On the field, De Beer has evolved. Once known primarily as a tactical kicker, he has adapted to the modern demands of a running, decision-making fly-half.
“It’s about balance,” he said. “You need to be able to control the game but also attack and make the right calls.”
With the Dragons pushing for a strong finish domestically and preparing for a Challenge Cup semifinal in France, De Beer’s leadership and consistency have become central to their identity.
For a player whose journey started in Pretoria, this weekend offers a reminder of how far he’s come — and how much impact he continues to have.
