A potential new era for English rugby union could be emerging in the West Midlands, with the US investment group behind Birmingham City Football Club exploring plans to launch a professional rugby franchise in the city.

Knighthead Capital Management, the American firm led by financier Tom Wagner and backed by former NFL quarterback Tom Brady, is understood to be assessing opportunities to expand its growing sporting footprint in Birmingham. The group already holds majority ownership of Birmingham City and last year secured a 49 per cent stake in Birmingham Phoenix, the city’s Hundred cricket franchise.

Sources familiar with discussions suggest professional rugby union represents the next potential frontier for Knighthead as English rugby seeks fresh investment amid structural reform at the elite level.

The timing is significant. The development comes ahead of a pivotal Rugby Football Union Council meeting expected to approve plans to remove promotion and relegation from the Gallagher Premiership Rugby as part of preparations for an expanded 12 team competition targeted for launch in 2029.

For years, the financial risk associated with relegation has been viewed as a major deterrent for private investors entering the English club game. A ring fenced structure would offer greater commercial certainty, making long term infrastructure and squad investment more viable.

RFU chief executive Bill Sweeney has previously held exploratory discussions with Birmingham City regarding the possibility of staging England internationals in the West Midlands should Allianz Twickenham become unavailable, underlining the governing body’s interest in expanding rugby’s geographic reach beyond its traditional strongholds.

Knighthead’s possible entry would mirror the growing influence of global investment groups within rugby union following Red Bull’s takeover and rebranding of Newcastle Falcons earlier this season. Industry observers believe outside capital is increasingly viewed as essential to stabilising professional rugby’s economic model.

Should Knighthead pursue direct entry into the Premiership’s future expansion, a formal tender process would be required. Applicants could include resurrected or existing clubs such as Worcester Warriors, or entirely new franchises designed around commercial markets rather than historic membership structures.

One alternative pathway could involve acquisition or partnership with Birmingham Moseley, once a dominant force in English club rugby during the amateur era. Currently competing in National One, the third tier of the domestic pyramid, Moseley are among several clubs to have expressed interest in joining the restructured Championship, widely positioned as a proving ground for future Premiership entrants.

Strategically, Birmingham represents an attractive expansion market. Premiership Rugby executives have openly discussed ambitions to broaden the league’s national footprint, with the West Midlands joining regions such as Yorkshire and Kent as priority growth areas.

If realised, a Birmingham based professional franchise would mark one of the most significant shifts in English rugby’s club landscape in decades, aligning the sport more closely with franchise driven investment models seen across American and global professional leagues.

For a sport searching for financial sustainability and renewed relevance, the arrival of heavyweight investors from outside rugby’s traditional ecosystem may signal that transformation is no longer theoretical but already underway.
