Investec Champions Cup Countdown: Why La Rochelle Rugby Can Win It All
Investec Champions Cup Countdown: Why La Rochelle Rugby Can Win It All
The Investec Champions Cup is seven days away, and FloRugby is making a case for each team to win it all. That includes Ronan O'Gara and La Rochelle.

The 2025-2026 Investec Champions Cup begins Dec. 5, and we're just seven days away from the Sale Sharks hosting the Glasgow Warriors at 3 p.m. ET at CorpAcq Stadium.
The Investec Champions Cup will determine the best team in Europe (and South Africa), as every contender aims to take the title from defending champion Union Bordeaux-Bègles of the Top 14.

But like in the film "The Highlander," there can only be one winner.
Every club will enter the competition believing it can lift the trophy on May 23, 2026, at San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao, Spain.
And that includes Stade Rochelais of the Top 14.
Here are three reasons why Stade Rochelais can win the 2025-2026 Investec Champions Cup:
La Rochelle Rugby Needs A Third Champions Cup In Five Years
La Rochelle won Investec Champions Cup titles in 2022 and again in 2023, both times rallying from behind to beat the heavily favored Leinster Rugby squad. And La Rochelle seemingly playa Leinster every year in the Champions Cup.

But now, it has been two Champions Cup tournaments since the team's last win, and the past two seasons have not been especially kind to La Rochelle. Much of that has been tied to star player, Will Skelton, missing time with injuries.
La Rochelle actually has had more success in the Champions Cup than in the Top 14 — which tells you how hard the Top 14 is to win.
Will Skelton May Be Healthy
Well, Will Skelton seemed to be pretty healthy, but he injured his ankle in mid-November, forcing him to miss the last two of Australia’s test matches.
But, if the 6-foot-8, 298-pound lock is healthy, he’s one of the game’s best players and most imposing figures.
One of the smaller members of his family, Skelton was ranked No. 45 on the FloRugby Top 100 Player Rankings.
Here’s what FloRugby’s Philip Bendon wrote:
“A towering and transformative lock, Will Skelton has carved out a remarkable international and club career through sheer power, surprising agility and leadership.
Known for his destructive ball-carrying and silky offloads, Skelton has evolved into one of the most unique and influential forwards in the modern game.”
Ronan O’Gara Is The Coach, And He’s Basically Rugby’s Version Of The Nick Saban Coaching Rumor
There was a time when Nick Saban was essentially linked to every big college football coaching job — even while winning championships every year at Alabama. It’s because Saban had hopped around so much in his career before Alabama that people assumed he’d eventually take the next big-name job.
It helped that he was the best college football coach in the world, too.
La Rochelle coach Ronan O’Gara has kind of reached that same point at the club level. Any major international coaching position that opens up seems to have his name attached.
The Irish legend, who helped Munster Rugby win two Champions Cups from 1997-2013, didn’t leave La Rochelle for Munster this past year — but many believe his next job won’t be in club rugby at all. It’ll be international.
Since Scott Robertson left the Super Rugby Crusaders to coach the New Zealand All Blacks, O’Gara has essentially taken the mantle as the best club rugby coach who hasn’t yet coached at the international level.
The only question is: which country? France? England? Ireland? Or maybe somewhere not even on our radar?
Regardless of what his next job is, O’Gara certainly still is crushing it in his current one — as head coach of La Rochelle.
Bonus: The Demolition Man Is On The Roster
One of the best rugby nicknames out there is Levani Botia, who at 36, still is one of the key cogs for La Rochelle.
The Fijian center is nicknamed "The Demolition Man." He was an important piece for La Rochelle's two Champions Cup wins and Fiji's 2023 Rugby World Cup squad.
