Top 14 Round Four Preview: High Scores, Tight Standings And Drama Ahead

Five of the six match winners in the Top 14 last weekend scored at least 42 points as we were treated to a bevy of shootouts across all the action last weekend in French rugby’s top division.

That scoring pace certainly sounds good to us.

Multiple dominant attacking displays were the story of Round 3 as now just a single unbeaten team remains, tightening the standings and adding to the drama across the league in its first few weeks. Expect more fireworks in Round 4 this weekend, especially when the margin for error — with second place and 12th place in the table currently separated by just four points — is still so small.

Here’s a look ahead at the weekend of rugby action on tap on the Top 14 calendar, streamed live and exclusively in the U.S. on FloRugby:

NOTE: All match kickoff times are in Eastern Time.

Bordeaux-Begles at Stade Francais, 8:30 a.m. Saturday

We noted in last week’s preview piece that Bordeaux-Begles had the potential to bounce back in a big way against Montauban after the reigning EPCR Champions Cup winners fell flat in a Round 2 defeat to Racing 92. It’s safe to say that it did just that. Even by UBB’s lofty standards, its 71-24 demolition of last-placed Montauban was a sight to behold as it ripped the newly-promoted side to shreds, being ahead 14-0 after 10 minutes, crossing over for 11 tries — with Louis Bielle-Biarrey and Nicolas Depoortere each scoring twice — and scoring 45 points in the second half alone for a resounding victory at the Stade Chaban-Delmas. Now, a trip to Paris awaits Bordeaux in what should be a stellar opener to Round 4, as Stade Francais has scored at least 37 points in a match twice already this season, including in last weekend’s barnburner of a loss to table-topping Lyon. Bielle-Biarrey may currently be leading the individual try-scoring charts at the moment with four to his name, but ultra-impressive Stade fly-half Louis Carbonel is simultaneously the French top-flight’s top points scorer at the moment with 44, with him stuffing the stat sheet against Lyon thanks to a try, three penalties and four conversions. We could be in for a calamitous showdown in the capital on Saturday.

Clermont at Racing 92, 10:35 a.m. Saturday

It says a lot about the high-octane performances we had across the league in Round 3 that Racing 92 scored 28 points in its victory against Perpignan and finished as the holders of the lowest final tally among last weekend’s winners. But alas, we might be reaching a point already in the Top 14 season where teams are hitting their strides offensively — meaning we could be in for some epic matches this weekend. Racing 92 took care of business last weekend against winless Perpignan, winning 28-15 by storming back from an early 10-0 deficit for a proper follow-up to its massive Round 2 victory against Bordeaux-Begles. But Clermont picked up its first win of the campaign in a little more shocking fashion, dropping 50 points on Pau in a display that saw Georgian prop Giorgi Akhaladze score twice. Clermont’s had the more lively attack through three weeks despite being 12th in the standings entering this weekend, with its 90 points scored being fourth in the league even as results haven’t entirely gone its way. Racing’s defence will have a major task on its hands in what could be a match where league standings don’t tell the entire story.

Montpellier at Montauban, 10:35 a.m. Saturday

Montpellier had the most head-turning result of Round 3 as it not only defeated the three-time defending French champions but also absolutely dominated them. In a statement 44-14 win over Toulouse, Les Cistes got the bonus point in style with five tries from five different players to pick up a wild first win of their 2025-26 campaign. The trick now for Montpellier, which has had a tumultuous past few seasons between cycling through coaches and avoiding the relegation zone, is to turn that confidence-boosting result into sustained form. It’ll get a major opportunity to do that against Montauban, whose magical story as an unlikely promoted side from Pro D2 is starting to run out of juice. Though Montauban’s attack has looked somewhat formidable in its return to the French top flight after 15 years away, its defence has been absolutely abysmal through three weeks, allowing the most points in the league (143) by far and coming off shipping through 71 points to Bordeaux-Begles last weekend in a blowout loss. Montpellier will be aiming to avoid the hangover and keep the good times rolling — especially as it should know after the club’s past few years that there are no easy games in the Top 14.

Lyon at Pau, 10:35 a.m. Saturday

Lyon stands alone as the last remaining unbeaten team in the Top 14 (among those that have played at least three matches), and it’s especially well-deserved after its wild win over Stade Francais last weekend. In a helter-skelter encounter that was undoubtedly the most pulsating match of Round 3, LOU pulled out the 42-37 victory thanks to braces from Fijian back-rower Iosefo Masi and Italian flyer Monty Ioane, with its defences holding on tight in the final stanza after Stade scored 14 points as part of a six-minute flurry in the final quarter. After falling short of silverware last season by way of losing in the EPCR Challenge Cup final, Lyon looks like a squad bent on revenge, and if momentum holds throughout the coming months, it could very well be in the running to win its first French top-flight championship since 1933. Pau would love nothing more than to spoil the party in the Pyrenees this weekend, however, but it’ll need to show better cohesion in defense first after taking a 50-27 beating at the hands of Clermont in Round 3 — a bit of a shocking display from Pau after it only allowed 25 points combined in its first two matches of the Top 14 campaign.

Perpignan at La Rochelle, 10:35 a.m. Saturday

La Rochelle unexpectedly got a bye week in Round 3 as its scheduled visit to Toulon to cap off the weekend was marred by a torrential downpour last Sunday that flooded the Stade Mayol, leading to the postponement of the match due to unplayable conditions and safety concerns. Therefore, Ronan O’Gara’s men return home this weekend against Perpignan with an extra week of rest under their belt — something La Rochelle could use to its advantage early in the domestic calendar. Perhaps that added energy could lead to a needed fast start for the hosts this weekend, too; through two matches played, La Rochelle has only scored one try in the first half, something that proved to be irrelevant in Round 2 as it defeated Clermont but proved costly on opening weekend against Bordeaux-Begles as La Rochelle only mustered three points by the intermission. Perpignan, meanwhile, dropped to 0-3 to start the season after a loss to Racing 92 last weekend and needs points to avoid spiralling, as it and Montauban are currently locked at the bottom of the table on zero points. Among clubs that have played at least three matches, Perpignan’s attack has been the weakest at a league-low six tries and 47 points scored.

Castres at Toulouse, 3 p.m. Saturday

Off nights happen in rugby, even for one of the world’s most powerful clubs. But should more alarm bells be ringing for Toulouse after a disastrous 30-point loss to Montpellier in Round 3? Probably not quite yet, as this is still a club in the midst of a domestic dynasty that we’re talking about here, but still, little about Toulouse’s performance last weekend could be called inspiring. Coach Ugo Mola, across his decade in charge at France’s most successful club, has seen it all in his tenure, though, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see Les Rouge et Noir get right back up to title-contending form with a strong performance back at home against a visiting Castres. Keep in mind, however, that the incoming visitors did dump seven tries on Bayonne in an impressive 48-17 win last weekend, with Cameroonian winger Christian Ambadiang looking especially strong with a brace. Pulling a shock win against Toulouse could catapult Castres forward and potentially increase the amount of worry in the Toulouse dressing room — but that’s much easier said than done, especially at the Stade Ernest-Wallon.

Toulon at Bayonne, 3:05 p.m. Sunday

Let’s try this again, shall we? For the second straight week, Toulon will be slated to cap off a weekend of rugby in the Top 14, although it didn’t get the chance to do that last weekend, as aforementioned storms struck Toulon before its scheduled match against La Rochelle, leaving RCT on the sidelines as its match was postponed. Pierre Mignoni’s side probably wanted to get on a roll after it won its first two matches of the season, but instead, it’ll have to navigate past the unexpected stopgap in its schedule and get back into shape with a visit to Bayonne in Round 4. That won’t be easy, even against a Bayonne squad that didn’t look impressive against Castres this past weekend, after which it didn’t score a try until the 49th minute. Remember, Bayonne went unbeaten domestically at the Stade Jean-Dauger last season for a reason, turning their home ground in France’s Basque Country into a fortress that few clubs were able to escape from with points. That makes a victory for Toulon this weekend a taller task than it may seem on the surface, but as one of the most impressive squads in the early goings of the Top 14 season, Toulon will look to be up to the task to make the trip a positive one.
