New Zealand All Blacks vs. France Highlights

The No. 2-ranked South Africa Springboks and the No.1-ranked New Zealand All Blacks return for one of the most iconic and historic rivalries in rugby this Saturday (Sept. 6) for the third round of The Rugby Championship.

Hosted in Auckland, New Zealand, the Springboks have a massive weight on their shoulders heading into Eden Park, as they have not won a match against the All Blacks inside that stadium since 1937–the same year shopping carts were introduced.

Over the 10 contests the two have played as opponents in Eden Park, South Africa has only won twice, with back-to-back wins in 1921 and 1937.

Their most recent meeting came in 2013, when New Zealand won 29-15, and the Springboks are eager to finally overcome a feat that has haunted them for decades.

“When you look back on it, South Africa has four World Cup titles, New Zealand has three World Cup titles. They've been going back and forth for 100 years, maybe a bit more at this stage,” FloRugby expert Philip Bendon said. “But the Boks are riding a four game win streak against the All Blacks, which is their second longest in history.”

The All Blacks also are riding a win streak of their own: a 50-game win streak at Eden Park that has lasted since 1994. In total, they have won 80 out of the 93 total matches played inside the venue.

South Africa vs. New Zealand In The Rugby Championship

Both squads enter the third round of The Rugby Championship with a win and a loss.

South Africa tasted an opening-day defeat from Australia but bounced back with a win to tie the series, while New Zealand overcame Argentina at first yet slipped in the second contest to tie their series as well.

The All Blacks will bring a No. 1 world ranking with them, but the Springboks are hot on their tails with a No. 2 ranking.

“I've kind of said from the start that I feel like the Boks are going to win one down in New Zealand. For some reason, I just feel like it's this Auckland one that they've circled,” Bendon said. “I mean, this South African team, every time they've circled a big event, they tend to have gone on and done it. So, I would really back them to have built themselves up emotionally for this one.”

South Africa has established itself as one of the most prominent teams in international rugby, but New Zealand has built and maintained a foundation of success that is unmatched, making this weekend a battle fans won’t want to miss.
