The All Blacks’ fortress at Eden Park held firm once again as New Zealand defeated Australia 33-24 in a gripping Rugby Championship clash on Saturday.

New Zealand’s fast start set the tone. Caleb Clarke struck in the opening minutes before Leroy Carter added another to give the hosts a double-digit lead. Cam Roigard also crossed in the first half, while Beauden Barrett’s boot stretched the advantage to 20-3 midway through the opening 40.

Yet the Wallabies refused to fold. Hooker Billy Pollard powered over for their first try, followed by winger Harry Potter just before halftime. James O’Connor converted both as Australia stormed back to trail only 20-17 at the break.

Momentum briefly shifted toward the visitors early in the second half, but discipline again proved costly. A string of penalties handed Damian McKenzie two shots at goal, both converted, to restore a cushion. Ardie Savea’s trademark turnover work also halted promising Wallaby attacks.

Still, the contest remained tense. Carlo Tizzano’s late try pulled Australia within two, igniting hopes of a famous upset. But Roigard sealed the result with a superb support line finish after slick interplay from Jordie Barrett and Carter, pushing the All Blacks clear.

Australia’s inability to control territory and kicking accuracy under pressure told in the end, while New Zealand’s composure at key moments preserved their 30-year unbeaten run at Eden Park.

The victory lifts the All Blacks back atop the Rugby Championship standings with one round remaining, while the Wallabies are left ruing another missed opportunity on New Zealand soil.

For New Zealand, it was win No. 59 in their past 61 Tests at Eden Park and another reminder why the venue remains international rugby’s toughest trip.

The Rugby Championship is up for grabs as we head into Round 5 of the competition. There are only two points separating first place Australia (11 points) from last Argentina (9 points), with two massive matchups this weekend.

First up, the Bledisloe Cup between Australia and New Zealand at Eden Park. While Australia have broken out during this TRC, the All Blacks have been defeated at Eden Park since 1994. So there's that.

But it's fair to say this New Zealand team has had a rocky ride this competition, losing badly the Springboks last week, and suffering a defeat at the hands of Los Pumas in August.

Australia don't quite control their own destiny yet, but a win over New Zealand would go a long way to putting them in the driver's seat of this year's trophy.

ALL BLACKS WIN! 33 - 24

Fraser McReight’s All-Around Impact Fuels Wallabies Pack

Fraser McReight has scored a try in each of his last two Tests against New Zealand while making 36 of 40 tackles and 17 carries. He also leads the 2025 Rugby Championship in rucks hit (128) and ranks second in tackles completed (58).

Before Round 5 begins, get the scoop on the round

All Blacks’ 30-Year Stronghold In Auckland

New Zealand is unbeaten in its last 60 Tests in Auckland with 58 wins and two draws. The All Blacks have won 14 straight in the region, including a 24-17 victory against South Africa in 2025, and last lost there to France in July 1994.

James O’Connor Balances Creativity With Inconsistent Kicking

No player has more offloads (six) or break assists (six) in the 2025 Rugby Championship than James O’Connor, who also has three try assists and three line breaks in his last four Tests against New Zealand. But the Wallabies playmaker has converted only three of six goal kicks in that span.

Late-Game Surge Lifts Wallabies As All Blacks Leak Tries

Australia has scored nine tries in the final 20 minutes of matches at the 2025 Rugby Championship, the most of any team. New Zealand has conceded 10 second-half tries, the most of any side in the tournament.

All Blacks’ Two-Decade Home Dominance Over Wallabies

New Zealand is unbeaten in its last 30 men’s Tests against Australia on home soil, with 29 wins and one draw. The All Blacks have won 10 of their past 14 such matches by 20 points or more, last losing at home to the Wallabies in August 2001 at Carisbrook in Dunedin.

Will History Be Made In This Bledisloe Cup?

For New Zealand, they won nine straight against the Wallabies and a win today would match for the longest winning streak against their Pacific neighbors.

Meanwhile, Australia can stun the rugby world if the Wallabies, not the Springboks, become the team that ends a 51-match winning stream at Eden Park that started more than 30 years ago.

New Zealand has already made history once this summer when they beat France on July 5 to become the first nation to win 500 test matches.

New Zealand Vs. Australia Kickoff Time
