The All Blacks were outmuscled up front, outkicked territorially and outscored six tries to one. Debutant Leroy Carter offered a glimmer of promise with a first-half try, but overall it was a bruising night for Scott Robertson’s side.
Here’s how the All Blacks players rated:
1. Ethan de Groot – 4
Scrum pressure told early, and he struggled to impose himself around the park. Only three carries and two tackles made before being replaced.
2. Samisoni Taukei’aho – 4
Eight tackles and 27 metres carried, including a line break, but also threw a costly wayward lineout. Conceded a turnover and never got on top in the set-piece.
3. Tyrel Lomax – 4
Conceded two penalties, made just three tackles and had little impact with the ball in hand. Outgunned by Ox Nche at scrum time in a major way.
4. Scott Barrett – 5
Battled hard with 11 tackles, one lineout win and 11 metres carried. Tried to set standards as captain, but couldn’t rally a side well beaten.
5. Tupou Vaa’i – 4
Stole one lineout and made 13 tackles, but carried for only nine metres. Penalised at key moments and never imposed himself which is massively disappointing given his showing just a week ago.
6. Simon Parker – 6
One of the brighter forwards on debut. Six tackles, 23 metres from four carries, plus a line break and an offload. Raw yet a willing player who gave 100%.
7. Ardie Savea – 6
Busy defensively with 11 tackles and two lineout wins. Carried for 20 metres, two defenders beaten and two turnovers won, but starved of front-foot ball and well marshalled by the Springboks.
8. Wallace Sititi – 5
Strong first carries (21 metres, two defenders beaten) but faded as the Springboks tightened the screw. Conceded one penalty and was overall kept quite by the Bok pack, who often double-tackled him.
9. Noah Hotham – N/A
Forced off inside 10 minutes, too little time to rate.
10. Beauden Barrett – 5
Kicked loosely and struggled for control. Ten tackles, two offloads and 35 metres from 10 carries, but couldn’t spark the attack under suffocating pressure. At this stage of his career, he doesn't quite spark an attack like he used to if his pack aren't dominant.
11. Leroy Carter – 6.5
One of the few positives. Marked debut with a try, carried for 25 metres, beat seven defenders and showed energy on the wing. Defensive reads need polish; overall, it was a solid first showing in the black shirt.
12. Jordie Barrett – 6.5
Worked hard defensively with a team-high 14 tackles. Added 27 metres and five defenders beaten from 12 carries. Reliable but ultimately lacked the flash to make anything happen in midfield against the physical Springbok centres.
13. Billy Proctor – 4
Struggled on both sides of the ball. Six defenders beaten from 13 metres carried, but also slipped tackles and threw loose passes. Given he is still new to test level, there is time to grow but performances like this could count against him in the short term.
14. Will Jordan – 4
Two line breaks and 25 metres carried, but wasted a certain try with a knock-on. Eight tackles yet nowhere near his sharpest as was evidenced by his fumbled try.
15. Damian McKenzie – 4
Slotted an early penalty but failed to control territory. Seven tackles, one line break, two offloads and 11 metres gained. Conceded a penalty and looked rattled at fullback which is concerning given Scott Robertson's aversion to picking him at flyhalf.
Replacements
16. Brodie McAlister – 5
Added six tackles and one dominant hit, but couldn’t change the lineout issues.
17. Tamaiti Williams – 6
Showed glimpses of impact with six tackles and one metre carried. Still learning at the Test level, but competed well.
18. Fletcher Newell – 5
Made seven tackles and carried once, but struggled to lift the scrum’s stability which is now a major concern for the All Blacks.
19. Fabian Holland – 6
Showed promise with three tackles and three lineout wins. Strong for a young lock in a tough contest. His pinching of a Springbok line-out on the All Blacks ' five-meter line released some pressure.
20. Du’Plessis Kirifi – 4
Conceded a penalty and had little impact beyond four tackles. A forgettable outing for a normally explosive and influential fetcher.
21. Finlay Christie – 4
Seven tackles and a handful of passes, unlike last week, he couldn’t inject tempo or variety into the contest.
22. Quinn Tupaea – 3
Five tackles and 12 metres carried, but a late knock-on killed momentum. Never settled defensively and ultimately brought very little in terms of impact, just a week removed from scoring a big-time try.
23. Ruben Love – 3
Minimal involvement with one tackle and one carry. Given no platform to shine so pretty tough to rate on the whole.
