Argentina survived a furious late rally from Australia to claim a 28-26 win on Saturday, Sept. 13 in The Rugby Championship before a record crowd at Allianz Stadium.

Flyhalf Santiago Carreras was perfect from the tee, slotting seven penalty goals and a conversion to finish with 23 points. His consistency kept Los Pumas in control for much of the match as Argentine fans filled the Sydney venue with chants and songs.

Julián Montoya crossed in the seventh minute to celebrate his 50th cap as captain with a try, giving Argentina an early edge after Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii’s opener had briefly put the Wallabies in front. Argentina led 19-7 at halftime, aided by Max Jorgensen’s yellow card for a deliberate knock-on.

The second half saw Argentina extend their lead to 28-7 by the 63rd minute, but momentum shifted after Carreras himself was shown a yellow card. Australia stormed back behind tries from Andrew Kellaway and Filipo Daugunu, cutting the deficit to 28-26 in the 79th minute after James O’Connor’s conversion.

Argentina held firm in the final seconds to secure only their second victory of the 2025 tournament. Australia finished with more carries (138 to 128) and line breaks (11 to 3), but 13 penalties conceded and 18 turnovers proved costly.

The match drew 41,912 fans, the largest crowd in Allianz Stadium history, underscoring the intensity of the Wallabies-Pumas rivalry.

Argentina improved to 1-2 in this year’s competition, level on points with South Africa but ahead on differential. Australia also sit at 2-1, while New Zealand top the standings after three rounds.

Los Pumas now head to face the Springboks, while the Wallabies regroup for their next clash against New Zealand.

Turnover Kings And Costly Mistakes

One more fact before kickoff:

Australia’s Corey Toole and Argentina’s Pablo Matera have each forced four turnovers during the 2025 Rugby Championship, the most of any players. However, the downside for the Wallabies has been Andrew Kellaway, who has conceded a tournament-high eight turnovers, showing both Australia’s aggressive breakdown presence and moments of costly errors.

James O’Connor Nears Milestone For Wallabies

Veteran Wallabies playmaker James O’Connor stands just two points shy of the 300-point mark in Test rugby, with 298 already tallied. He has been especially sharp against Argentina recently, scoring 16 points in just under 150 minutes of action, including a perfect seven-from-seven record with the boot in that stretch.

Australia have enjoyed an improved record in Sydney lately, winning three of their last four Tests there, including a notable 22-12 triumph over the British & Irish Lions this past August. This marks a stark turnaround, considering they had managed only one victory in their previous 12 matches played in the New South Wales capital before this run of form.

Wallabies' Recent Form Surge

The Wallabies have turned a corner by winning three of their last four Tests after a rough stretch that saw them claim only one victory in their previous five.

Interestingly, in those nine games, they have surpassed the 30-point mark just once, showing their recent success has been based more on defensive resilience and key moments rather than offensive firepower.

Argentina Rugby’s Half-Time Trend Against Australia

Argentina have not trailed at the break in any of their last six Tests against Australia, yet they have still suffered three defeats during that span. The Pumas also have not managed to overturn a half-time deficit against the Wallabies since October 2014, a sign that while they often start well, their second-half execution has too often let them down.

Australia Rugby Has Recent Edge Over Argentina

Australia has won two of its last three Tests against Argentina, including a dramatic comeback victory in Round 3 of The Rugby Championship 2025. Despite this success, the Wallabies have not managed to defeat Los Pumas twice in the same calendar year since 2021, underscoring both the difficulty of maintaining consistency in this rivalry and Argentina’s ability to rebound strongly after losses.
