Rugby Recap July 12th 2025

The Black Ferns are set to close out their July test series with a showdown against familiar foes, the Wallaroos, in front of a sold-out crowd at Sky Stadium in Wellington, New Zealand.

The match marks the second meeting of the year between the two sides, with New Zealand defeating Australia earlier in the Pacific Four Series.

With the O’Reilly Cup presented by Bupa on the line, and the Rugby World Cup just weeks away, the weekend clash carries added significance.

New Zealand, ranked No. 3 in the world behind England and Canada, will aim to assert dominance again over sixth-ranked Australia.

The Black Ferns are welcoming back experienced playmaker Kelly Brazier to the test fold, while also giving a debut opportunity to lock Laura Bayfield. Both players were recognized for their recent form by Black Ferns Director of Performance Allan Bunting.

“Laura was a standout throughout Sky Super Rugby Aupiki this year… It’s going to be a proud moment for Laura and her whānau,” Bunting said in a press release. “It has also been great having Kelly in the July Series squad. Her experience has really added to our depth at 10.”

Meanwhile, Australia continues to blend youth with experience.

Head coach Jo Yapp named 17-year-old Waiaria Ellis to the starting XV, making her the eighth Wallaroo debutant this year.

Ellis joins the back three alongside Faitala Moleka and Desiree Miller. Charlotte Caslick moves into the midfield, and Tia Hinds will guide the team from fly-half.

Yapp said Ellis has earned her place after standout performances for Australia A and consistent development through Wallaroos camps.

“She has an excellent skillset, and her youthfulness has a great effect on the playing group,” Yapp said.
