Argentina defeated the British & Irish Lions 28-24 in a hard-fought 1888 Cup clash in Dublin, spoiling the Lions’ first match on Irish soil.

Los Pumas opened strong, with Ignacio Mendy and Tomás Albornoz scoring early.

The Lions responded with tries from Bundee Aki and Tadhg Beirne, plus a penalty try, briefly taking the lead.

But Santiago Cordero finished a brilliant coast-to-coast try in the second half that shifted momentum back to Argentina.

Despite standout efforts from Tommy Freeman and Marcus Smith, the Lions were undone by errors and penalties in front of a sold-out crowd at Aviva Stadium.

Recap updates, scores and highlights from the game below.

Argentina Defeats British & Irish Lions

Final: Argentina 28, British & Irish Lions 24

Despite only being contested as a "warm-up" match, the win by Argentina over the British & Irish Lions can only be described as an upset.

Despite it being the Lions' first game on Irish soil, it's absolutely stunning for the Southern Hemisphere team to head to Aviva Stadium in Dublin and defeat an all-star cast, coached by Andy Farrell.

Tomas Albornoz was brilliant for Los Pumas, scoring three penalty goals, one try and making two conversions.

On the Lions side, Freeman had a great game, along with Smith. Mistakes ended up being the biggest enemy to the Lions, as balls popped out and counter-attacks ended in penalties or knock-ons.

The Lions will head down under next, with a series of matches against Australian clubs before playing a trio of matches against the Wallabies later in July.
