La Rochelle Rugby's quest to join its fellow French club Toulon as the only three-peat European Champions Cup winners begins very far away from Europe. 

After going 2-0-2 in Pool 4 play, Stade Rochelais will have to face one of the South African powers in the DHL Stormers, 3-0-1, a team that already beat the two-time defending champions in DHL Stadium.

It's been a difficult season both in Champions Cup play and Top 14 play for the French power. They enter the Round of 16 currently sixth in the Top 14 standings at 9-0-10. La Rochelle lost its first two Champions Cup matches to tournament favorite Leinster Rugby and the the Stormers. Leinster, who has lost to La Rochelle in back-to-back Grand Finals, won 16-9 in La Rochelle. 

A week later, the champions traveled to Cape Town and suffered a tough 21-20 loss.

La Rochelle enters the match as the No. 10 seed with the Stormers at No. 7. In 2022, La Rochelle won the championship as the No. 5 seed in the playoffs after finishing third in the A Pool. In 2023, La Rochelle won the B Pool and was the No. 2 seed. 

This is the second appearance in the Champions Cup for the Stormers, who qualified for the 2023 Champions Cup after winning the URC Rugby Grand Final. 

The Stormers are 7-0-5 in URC play this season. 

in 2023-2024, both Clubs advanced to the Round of 16 out of the toughest Pool in the field beating La Rochelle and the Stade Francais Paris in Paris to advance. The Stormers avoided Leinster in Pool 4 play and lost to Leicester Tigers.
