An All-Time NBA Starting XV
An All-Time NBA Starting XV
What would a rugby team of the NBA's greatest of all time look like? We're taking our best shot at putting a unit together.

First we created a starting XV out of the NFL's legends. Now we're looking at the best of the best from the NBA. Though perhaps not as physical or aggressive as the football players, it stands to reason the basketball players would form a dangerous team in its own right.
Here's the FloRugby All-NBA team:
1. Shaquille O'Neal

The biggest beast to ever step on the hardwood, O'Neal would be a dominant presence in the scrum and an absolute force in open play. At his prime, Shaq was as fit as anyone in the league, and could certainly last well more than a half of rugby.
2. Charles Barkley

The round mound of rebound could easily be a Dane Coles type hooker plus about five inches and 15 pounds. Despite being one of the NBA's most physical players in his day, Barkley was also one of the most skilled. We could trust him to hit his lineouts and be a threat across the field.
3. Glen "Big Baby" Davis

Big Baby was never the dominant force that Shaq was, but at 6'9 and 290 pounds, he was another earth mover in the paint. Paired with O'Neal and Barkley, he would contribute to a massive, powerful scrum with heaps of mobility.
4. Karl Malone

The "Mailman" was not only one the largest men in the NBA, he was also one of the most brutal. With a pair of vicious elbows that he was never afraid to use, and a mentality full of piss and vinegar, Malone makes an ideal second rower. Effective in the lineout and an enforcer in open play, he needs to be in the squad.
5. Hakeem Olajuwon

Before beginning his Hall of Fame basketball career, Hakeem the Dream was a soccer goalie in his native Nigeria. Seeing his elite agility and footwork on the court, it's no surprise the big man excelled in other sports. Imagine how deadly he'd be in the lineout and with his offloads.
6. Zion Williamson

Zion might just be the freakiest athlete the NBA has seen since Lebron entered the league. At 6'6 and 285 lbs, it doesn't make any sense how Zion has a 45" vertical leap. As a blindside flanker, Williamson would be a nightmare to run at and likely impossible to bring down with just one tackler.
7. Dennis Rodman

You want a freak at flanker that gets their nose in the action at every opportunity. While not the biggest guy in the NBA, Rodman is probably the most ferocious to ever suit up. He'd be all over every flyhalf and just a general menace around the park for 80 minutes.
8. Lebron James

The King could likely play any position on the field if he wanted, but we have to think his best impact would be at No. 8, where he can get involved in the set piece and in open play. Huge, strong, fast, smart, intense, and skilled beyond belief, James would simply be so unstoppable.
9. Chris Paul

Scrum-halves typically have the qualities of being smart, creative, shifty, and pesty. Nobody personifies these traits in the NBA like CP3, who is a phenomenal distributor that can make plays on his own when he absolutely has to. He's also got a prickly edge to him which is why he'd fit nicely as a scrappy scrum-half.
10. Steve Nash

Nash isn't a huge guy by any means, but at 6'3, 180 lbs he's big enough to be a fly-half that runs the show by kicking and passing. With a background in soccer, we know Nash has a solid boot, and his vision and game management skills are some of the best in NBA history.
11. Russell Westbrook

It's very possible that Westbrook is the fastest player ever in the NBA. An absolute freak of an athlete that has a knack for scoring, Russ would make a perfect winger. Furthermore, imagine his aerial game with those hops.
12. Magic Johnson

Magic revolutionized distributing the basketball, and you can imagine he'd be a similar magician on the rugby field. As a general and second fly-half in the center, he'd be a perfect pillar in the midfield. He's also proven that he can step up and play center at an elite level, so he's not gonna be outmatched physically by anyone.
13. Andre Iguadola

We want to get a defensive specialist in the midfield, and it's hard to think of a better guy than Andre Iguadola. The man at the heart of the Golden State Warrior dynasty's defense, Iggy is a very athletic, rangy player with an extremely high work rate. He'd be the glue guy on the rugby field.
14. Allen Iverson

Like Westbrook on the other wing, AI is lightning fast with an extreme knack for scoring. Having been a stand-out quarterback in high school, we also know that Iverson has a background in evading tackles. He's also one of the toughest players of all time -- another perfect rugby trait.
15. Michael Jordan

His airness is the perfect fullback. He would dominate the high ball, he would make his meters with ball in hand, and he would score whenever he'd need to. He's also one of the best defenders ever, so as the last line of defense, we think MJ would have the team in safe hands.
