Rudy Scholz Award Watchlist: Damon Wiley

While a fair few D1A teams ran through the majority of their schedule in the fall, including teams in the Rugby East, the Big Ten, and the Liberty conferences, springtime is when the competition really heats up.

At the culmination of the spring campaign, another champion will be crowned, with Life University seeking an unprecedented D1A three-peat.

In addition to that, the collegiate rugby rendition of the Heisman Trophy will also be awarded to the most outstanding male player of the year.

The award, named after the great Rudy Scholz, was created in 2016 by Alex Goff of Goff Rugby Report and the Washington Athletic Club in Seattle.

Previous winners of the award have been USA Eagles Dylan Audsley, Bryce Campbell, and Harley Wheeler, and US Naval Officer Connor McNerney.

There are sure to be many candidates for the award as we move through 2020, for the moment we'll look at ten players in particular that land on our watch list:

Damon Wiley | Prop - Cal

Another prop lands on the watchlist, and boy is this guy a good one. Cal's Damon Wiley has all the makings of a future star.

His work in last year's national championship game alone is major testament to his abilities and the type of threat he can be. Against a dominant Life defense, Wiley was Cal's primary source of offense, scoring two tries and consistently getting over the advantage line.

He's fairly tall for a front rower, and with his elite athleticism, there are dozens of top teams that might use him at No. 8 instead.

But as one of the anchors in Cal's outstanding scrum, keeping him up front is a no-brainer.

As he continues to develop in the Golden Bear program, Wiley will add more depth and variety to his game, which is a scary prospect if you're anything but a Cal fan.
