The qualifiers for the USA Rugby Club 7s Championships are already underway and this weekend is a big weekend as teams try to get started on a positive note.

One qualifier has already been played. The Pacific North region has a series of tournaments in which teams accumulate points for seeding at the Championships at Treasure Island in San Francisco in July.

Starting Strong In The PNW

The Westside Ronin in Washington hosted the first points-earning event two weeks ago, and the hosts won.

The Ronins entered two teams, the Ronins and the Ronins Koula. The Ronins won their pool while the Koula team went 1-1-1, meaning they met in the semis. Ronins won, as expected, and then beat the Washington Athletic Club 28-0 in the final.

Maile Taufa opened the scoring with a try and Suliasi Tamaivena added two more before captain Jope Motokana finished it off.

The Ronin team carries on a long-standing tradition of a Fijian-heavy sevens team coming out of the Seattle area. Seattle Fiji and, at times, Old Puget Sound, carried that banner. Now it's a team named after the masterless samurai warriors of feudal Japan.

Women Only Up North

This weekend, five qualifiers get underway. In the Atlantic North region, the Boston Union Point 7s in Weymouth, just outside Boston, kicks off the women's qualifier series. Hosted by the Boston Women's club, it's a chance for Boston to get on the road to a little redemption.

In 2018 at nationals, Boston went 2-1 in pool play only to be bumped out of a quarterfinal spot because of points difference. They will want a little bit more good fortune this year.

More Series Openers

Life West and Olympic Club men and Life West and Berkeley women headline what should be an entertaining NorCal double qualifier in San Jose. Rockford, IL opens up the Midwest's always ambitious season, which will culminate in the championship in Cincinnati.

The Rusted Knights 7s will be held at Central Florida and it's a big one because there are only two points-earning tournaments in the South. The other is in July. No time, then, to work your way into it. Atlanta Old White should be among the favorites.

SoCal Already Controversial?

Santa Monica hosts the first of three tournaments in Southern California. There was word that the USA Men's 7s program was going to enter a team of players who haven't broken into the national team—sort of a Chula Vista club.

Locals didn't care for that idea. We'll see which teams (OMBAC?) recruit those sevens residency players. The thing is, there's nothing stopping those players from forming a club of their own, as Bulldog did in a winning run last year.

Watch out for Belmont Shore, which has some exciting young talent and a coaching staff that includes Peter Sio and Justin Boyd.

Justin Boyd Back At Nationals

As usual, the women's side long ago settled this with less rancor and the San Diego Surfers often have some talented USA hopefuls on their squad, and they're pretty good.
