Weekend Watch Guide: Win or Go Home

Austin Blacks vs Life West 2019 5 Norma Salinas.JPG

This weekend southern teams head north to claim trophies. Atlanta Old White and Life have an opportunity to change the reputation of rugby in the south. In France, Montpellier heads north to face Lyon in the Top14 Playoffs. The Ohio high school state championship matches will kickoff all the action this weekend at the Fortress Obetz.

The Austin Blacks are going to pull up to the Fortress Obetz with two full squads. They are trying to walk out with two national championship trophies. Neither Life nor Grand Rapids will be pushed around.

Two weeks ago Harrisburg’s Nicole Snyder scored eight tries in two matches. She’ll score against Sacramento, the question is how frequently.

Old White and Life are out to prove that quality rugby exists in the south. Olympic Club are dangerous at set piece. They bullied teams at the maul in Austin, but don’t expect the maul to be as successful against a beefy Old White forward pack.

Racing 92 vs La Rochelle (Friday May 31st, 2pm CT)

Watch Racing 92 vs La Rochelle

The last time La Rochelle and Racing 92 played it was a 50-12 blowout victory for Racing. That was before owner Hans Peter-Wild called out his Racing players. That was before La Rochelle got hot. That was before Ronan O’Gara was rumored to be coming for the La Rochelle head coach job.

Lyon vs Montpellier (Saturday June 1st, 10am CT)

Watch Lyon vs Montpellier

Montpellier just might be the hottest team in professional rugby and players are noticing. Handre Pollard is linked to Montpellier, the rich get richer. Lyon is the higher seed and the host.

MLR Nationality Breakdown By Position: New England Freejacks

New England Free Jacks

The other day I was thinking about fly-halves in the MLR -- since that is my position -- and I got to thinking how few American players there are playing fly-half in Major League Rugby. The only ones I could think of off the top of my head were Ben Cima (SEA), Scott Dean (SEA), Tadgh Leader (NE) and Zinzan Elan-Puttick (AUS) -- and it's worth noting that both Leader and Elan-Puttick grew up playing rugby in Ireland and South Africa respectively.
