BYU, Virginia Tech Ready For Finals Clash
A look at the BYU vs Virginia Tech Women's 15s D1 Spring Final

The Women's D1 College spring final is between two teams with somewhat different stories.
For Virginia Tech, this has been a season for the ages. The Hokies has gone 9-0 in 15s rugby, and getting strong each time out.

They started with a tight 24-19 win over Navy in the fall, and you'd be forgiven for thinking Tech was one of a group of teams that could challenge for higher honors. Every more convincing wins, crucially 38-17 over Virginia, followed.
In the conference playoffs, Tech edged Virginia again, and then in the national playoffs did it again. Then in the national semis, handled a very capable Central Florida team 34-12.
In that game, Amelia Griese, Gabby Vitale, and Jetta Owens all scored two tries each, and Va Tech was in the final. The Hokies have come together brilliantly and done so in both 15s and 7s. It's been a special season, and a national spring title would be a fitting cap to this year.
But don't forget about BYU. Now, the Cougars are a different animal. BYU was in the D1 Elite playoffs last season, but that was really just a function of how the teams were distributed. BYU has none of the trappings of the D1 Elite or NIRA teams. No varsity or quasi-varsity status; they're a club sport like Virginia Tech and hundreds of other women's college teams.
But, bolstered by a strong Utah talent pool, BYU is expected to do well. They are a known quantity.

"We're not D1 Elite," said BYU head coach Tom Waqa. "We just happen to play like we are. And that's something that's earned through hard work of the players and coaching staff. The team is built on a culture of striving to be the very best version of ourselves whether it be as rugby players, coaches, or simply as good citizens and ambassadors of the sport."
Hooker Lora Gubler, flyhalf Matalasi Morrissette, and try-scoring Alissa Baker, have helped lead a team that has only lost once (to Central Washington), and has 14 wins under its belt.
Waqa gives a bit of an aw-shucks look at the final.
"We are just excited to be there and to be grouped together with Virginia Tech and other good DI teams in the business. We respect what Virginia Tech is going to bring to the table. We will not underestimate them—this is the DI Spring Championship. We have to be at our very best."
Certainly, Virginia Tech has nothing to lose. Most would probably favor BYU in this game, and Waqa is right, that attitude could spell trouble for the Cougars.
