College 7s Latest: Qualifier Time Starts
Several divisions are starting up their college 7s qualifiers.
This weekend has kicked off a serious run of college sevens tournaments that will earn qualification for one of the six brackets at the USA Rugby Collegiate 7s Championships.
Men D2
April 7 will bring the Tri-State Conference Men's D2 qualifier, the first of a series of qualifiers for the Women’s D2 bracket, which will be hosted by Vassar College.
Group A: William Paterson, Seton Hall, SUNY-Oneonta, Marist B
Group B: RPI, Hofstra, Montclair State, SUNY-New Paltz B
Group C: Marist, Monroe, Drew, William Paterson B
Group D: SUNY-New Paltz, Molloy, Vassar, Bard
Men D1A
On April 6, the first Men’s D1A qualifier was held. This will be the first year that a D1A-only tournament will be held, and for the most part the teams will be selected on an at-large basis.
But, there are going to be some conference tournaments, and Arkansas won its third straight after escaping some tight games with Oklahoma (in pool play), and Baylor in the semis. Texas A&M also had some close games and edged Oklahoma 17-15 in the semis.
In the final, Arkansas showcased some solid team play in wet conditions and pulled away 31-12.
Meanwhile, Notre Dame College defeated Kutztown in the final of the University of Michigan 7s. This wasn't a qualifier, but it was a chance for NDC to put others on notice.
Men D1AA
Western Washington still has some 15s playoff play to consider, but emerged comfortable winners at the Viking 7s the team hosts in Bellingham, WA.
