Penn State Upsets BYU In D1A Playoffs

It's been a bit of a slow spring for Penn State, and now the playoffs are on the horizon, so it makes sense to get ready in the most difficult way possible.

The Nittany Lions head to Marietta, GA to face defending D1A Champion Live University this weekend. The game is going to be LIVE on FloRugby, and will be an excellent chance for fans and scouts to see both of these teams in action.

Remember, Penn State made the semifinals in 2018 after they shocked BYU in the quarters. This year, the Nittany Lions are perhaps equally strong, with some of the best young backs in the game, and a back row of Joey Freeman, John McLean, and Rob Irimescu that is as good as anyone's.

With a solid front row and two locks—Ryan McNulty and Michael Jennings—who are probably more mobile than most teams' flankers, Penn State has the ability to beat you in a variety of ways.

But Life finds a way to win. After hanging on through some tight games this year, the Running Eagles exploded last week for a 47-6 defeat of Lindenwood. Scholz Award nominee Harley Wheeler has again be dangerous, but it helps to have the likes of Mitch Wilson, Duncan Van Schalkwyk, and Nikey Roberts in the backline, too.

Ryan Rees has become one of the most effective scrumhalves in the game while Justin Johnson, Daemon Torres, and Jamie Berrisford lead a forward pack that is grounded in grinding you down and burning you when you're slow.

This is a game that carries some playoff and rankings importance, but it also will tell us a lot about whether these teams can go as deep in the playoffs as last year.
