After looking like the best in the world, the USA men's sevens team can sometimes look very, very vulnerable, and they certainly did in Round 2 of the Vancouver 7s.

On a day that saw Spain beat New Zealand, you'd expect a shocker or two, and the Condors of Chile looked to have one cooking as they dominated possession and the penalty count in taking a 19-7 lead into halftime.

The USA gave up an early try to Benjamin De Vidts—a very well-taken team try—and after that started to get a little panicky, rushing the poaching opportunities and getting penalized repeatedly by referee Damian Schneider of Argentina.

The only real highlight of the the first half was Kevon Williams producing a nifty individual effort.

But head coach Mike Friday rang the changes at halftime, and Ben Pinkelman chugged through for a try. Moments later, Carlin Isles sped away, and the tide was turned. 

Isles and then Stephen Tomasin capped off a 33-19 result that clinched the quarterfinals for the USA, but should not have been that close.

Complacent and lackadaisical were the words used by Tomasin.

"We've seen it that in sevens if you don't play your best game you can lose," added Tomasin. "We gave [possession] back to them as soon as we got it."  

Next up is South Africa, but with the two wins already the USA is into the Cup Quarterfinals once again.
