Massive D1A Weekend: Notes And Picks

We've already made it plain that this is a pretty exciting weekend for D1A college rugby, and so it is.

We've got two top-10 meetings LIVE on FloRugby, plus plenty of other interesting matchups.

Defending D1A champion Life University takes on top-10 Arkansas State University.

Saint Mary's, 2017 D1A Champion, take on Top-10 rival BYU in Moraga.

There's also the matter of the Arizona-Arizona State clash. ASU has been looking fairly improved of late, but the Wildcats are very solid, coming off a strong outing against Grand Canyon.

"We've been improving on our defense, and defense has been a big part of what we've been working on," said Arizona head coach Sean Duffy. "Arizona State is always an important game for us and we're not quite sure what we're going to see."

The Red River games are all interesting, but won't have any effect on the major standings as Oklahoma and Texas A&M have clinched spots in the final.

Cal hosts Cal Poly and is heavily favored. Why? In seven 15s games this year (some shortened), Cal is 7-0 (not a surprise) and averaging 81 points per game (maybe a little surprising). Even more impressive, the Bears have given up six points, and no tries.

After snow canceled last week's game against BYU, Central Washington hosts a very tough Utah State game. This game actually has a huge effect on whether either (or both) of these teams make the D1A playoffs, and where they might be seeded.

CWU head coach Todd Thornley praised his team's attitude despite the disruption to the schedule, and added they "are excited to compete against someone other than themselves. We are looking forward to taking Utah state on up front and putting in a good performance."

The tightest game aside from the two on FloRugby will likely be UC Davis at San Diego State. We've picked SD State simply because the Aztecs are at home. This is another game that has D1A rankings and playoff implications.

"What Is Rugby?" - As Told By USA Eagles

What is rugby and what does it mean to those who play it? I had the privilege of speaking with eight different USA National Team players over the past couple of weeks, and I asked each of them that very question, "What is rugby?"

What Is Rugby Sevens & How Did It Get Started?

Somewhere, someday, somebody in 19th century thought to themselves, "Hmm, rugby would be a lot cooler if there were less players and more space to work with." The solution to this pondering was the invention of rugby sevens, which as the name would suggest, involves two teams of sevens playing on the same size pitch as a standard rugby game.

Getting Started: How Do I Play Rugby?

Though it's one of the greatest, if not the greatest, sports in the world, rugby remains a relatively unknown commodity in the United States. Yes, it's continued to gain some traction through the years and the garden variety sports fan has come to know what the sport is, but by and large it's still a very niche game in the states.

Rugby Equipment Every Team Should Have

One of the beautiful things about rugby is that it doesn't take much more than a ball, a pair of boots, some shorts, a shirt, and a mouthpiece to play it. It's an excellent sport that requires little in the way of setting it up, whether it's a real game or just touch.

Rugby Rules 101: What Is a Maul?

One of the most effective ways to cross over the try-line is the use of an efficient rolling maul. From club rugby to professional rugby, all the way to the international level, you'll see teams put opponents to the sword with a powerful maul. But, what are the rules surrounding this move, and how can a team make the most of a maul in a given situation?

Best Players To Wear Rugby Gloves

If there was ever time when rugby gloves ruled the sporting landscape, it was probably the 2003 Rugby World Cup in Australia. From Matt Dawson to Matt Giteau, George Smith to Stirling Mortlock, some of the best players in the world donned the gloves when they played.

A Brief History of Rugby

By now, many of us have heard the age old legend which tells of William Webb Ellis picking up the soccer ball and running with it, creating what would become known as rugby football in 1823.
