The Life West Gladiators have a very solid shot at pushing for a Pacific Rugby Premiership title this year, despite finishing with a losing record last season.

The Gladiators finished 4th, and were somewhat fortunate to be in the conversation for third as they were 3-7 in the regular season. That was just barely good enough to stay ahead of Santa Monica and Olympic Club, and thus get a game with SFGG for 3rd place.

Maybe, though, Life West isn't that far off. Head coach Adriaan Ferris thinks that's the case.

"We had 11 season-ending injuries last year," said Ferris. "Nine of those were starters in our 1st team. It's a long season, and we know we need depth, but that was tough for us."

Much healthier and with around 70 players available for training, the Gladiators could well be the deepest squad in the competition. They have pitched up against two Major League Rugby teams, and Ferris said that preparation has been crucial in getting his players up to speed.

"We've tested guys, we've had a solid buildup, and we feel we're ready to participate," he said.

With scrumhalf Deveraux Ferris, who earned his first USA cap this past fall, leading the way, Life West should rely on the leadership of the likes of Huluholo Moungaloa, Zach Bonte, and Brooks Tawake. But it's the newer players and the younger players who will make sure Life West brings it every week.

Moni Tanguiha looks to be a solid talent at flanker, and if they can stay healthy, they should be a contender.

Ferris believes it, but also recognizes that there are big challenges ahead.

"We're refocused on what we're doing, and the guys are turning up." he said. "We will continue to get the best out of our local players. We do understand it will take more than 23 players, especially with Glendale coming in. I voted for their inclusion and I think it's a really good thing. We want to make this league the strongest amateur league in the country, and having Glendale in the league helps us with that.
