The University of California defeated UCLA 31-3 Sunday to cap the Dennis Storer Classic.

Bruins fullback Cian Barry chipped in a 20-meter penalty before halftime to notch the only points scored against the Golden Bears in their three-match weekend at the event named in honor of the former UCLA and US National Team head coach.

Jack Iscaro and Christian Dyer both scored two tries for Cal and UCLA was denied any tries of their own. Nathan Zylstra added a try for Cal. Still, the Bears know they squandered some additional chances with self-inflicted errors.

"We were one pass away from scoring on some of our mistakes, but it's not just about the scoreline," said Iscaro. "We're more interested in the standard of rugby."

"We have tomorrow to go into the meeting room and start building for next week's game," said captain Nic Mirhashem. "We're looking forward to it."

Meanwhile, Central Washington slammed Cal Poly 66-10 in a non-conference D1A game. CWU scored within in the first minute, with No. 8 Alex Mackenzie doing the honors. Cal Poly answered with a Patrick Madden penalty, but tries from fullback Max Riseham, wing Marques Fauala’au, and Mackenzie again put the Wildcats up 26-3 after 17 minutes.

Wing Cole Zarcone’s try, with Henry Foster’s fourth conversion, made it 33-3 at halftime.

Jack Wendling, Fauala’au, Makani Mafua, Alex Cleary, and Zarcone again, with Jake Szumski converting three, finished off Central’s scoring. Cal Poly got a 54th-minute try from No. 8 Michael Daly, converted by Madden.

The other big D1A game of the weekend didn’t get played. The horrific weather hitting the Midwest and Northeast played havoc with air travel, and the ripple effects were felt further west. Saint Mary’s found its flight from Oakland, CA to Phoenix, AZ canceled, leaving them unable to play Grand Canyon.

This would have been GCU’s first California Conference game. It is unlikely that this game will be made up.
