The final 16 men’s D2 college playoff teams are set as the first play-in rounds concluded this weekend.

There were few upsets (as far as the FloRugby rankings are concerned), and some other games that were closer than some might expect.

The upsets all included more well-funded teams (a former D1AA school plus two varsity programs) defeating more established D2 teams that are still essentially clubs.

Lower-Ranked Wins 

Iowa Central Community College finally got to play a D2 team (all of their opponents have been D1 so far), and the #9-ranked Tritons handled a very good IUPUI team (#6) 56-15.

Virginia (#23) beat #13 Bloomsburg fairly comfortably 37-17. 

Queens College (#31) upended the rankings form sheet with an impressive 36-31 defeat of #8 Furman.

Close Shaves

UW-Milwaukee (ranked #16 by FloRugby) trailed at halftime and clawed back to beat Saint Louis University (26) 18-17.

Marquette (#12) had some work to do to defeat upstarts Ferris State (#30). 

On The Nose

SUNY-Geneseo’s 12-7 nail-biter of Bentley mirrored the rankings exactly as it was #32 over #33.

On Sunday, William Paterson (#21) beat Sacred Heart (#46) to advance.

So that sets up the bracket for this coming weekend at East Carolina University:
