West Point logged a huge victory Saturday, not only beat Penn State, but shutting out the undefeated Nittany Lions 31-0 to win the Rugby East with a 6-0 record.

The game was played in windy, wet conditions, and Army was surprisingly dominant despite Penn State's solid forward pack.

Lock Robert Niscior went over for the Black Knights at six minutes - James Mbony converted. and nine minutes later, No. 8 Bailey Abercrombie continued his excellent run of form with a try to make it 12-0.

Any hopes of a Penn State comeback were stymied in the final minutes before halftime, when lock Andrew Finken and hooker Matthew Meehan both went over. Mbony converted Meehan's tally, and it was 24-0 at halftime.

A lone second-half try through prop Marco Carrabotta made it all forwards for the tries. Wing Mbony was the only back to score, and he logged his third conversion.

For the most part, the Army backs did well to kick to space and chase. They were solid in defense out wide, and the forwards bashed over five tries, from pick-and-goes, to mauls, to a scrum pushover, to a wide-open run. 

"I am pretty proud of this performance," said Army head coach Matt Sherman. "I thought our defense was outstanding. We were just suffocating - good line speed, good decisions, our physicality, and height in the tackle. Our discipline wasn't perfect but was good enough. And our scrum was dominant."

With Abercrombie, Niscior, and Carrabotta having excellent performances, West Point puts its hand up as possibly one of the best teams in the nation. Penn State is an excellent team, and couldn't get anywhere against the Black Knights.
