Major Games In D1A, D1AA: Our Picks

Our college picks were a pretty strong last week - much stronger than they have been the last couple of weeks, as FloRugby correctly picked 32 out of 37 winners, for an 86.5% success rate.

We were more accurate in the winning margin, too, but there's no rest for anyone as we enter another crucial weekend.

Chesapeake

Mount St. Mary's remains unbeaten and probably will after this weekend's game against Salisbury - not a poor team at all, but Salisbury can't quite match the speedy MSM squad. But questions remain as to who will keep up the chase for a top three spot. Mary Washington is favored to win it all, but could Maryland (playing UMW and in need for bonus points if nothing else), or Virginia Tech and JMU (playing each other Friday night), be in the mix?

Hokies vs James Madison is the key one here.

SCRC

Kentucky made a statement last week in beating Tennessee, and will likely be 3-0 after this weekend with the Wildcats playing a doubleheader against Ole Miss and Mississippi State. With South Carolina off, and Tennessee on the road for a fall break tour at Memphis and Arkansas, the big game is likely Alabama (winners over USC last week) and the resurgent Kennesaw State.

Both are thinking playoffs.

Ivy League

Brown or Yale? Yale or Brown? Yup, they play each other. Anyone chasing the #2 spot (with Dartmouth soaring above) needs to win that game.

MAC

It's the big one! Bowling Green takes on Western Michigan. And while Ohio vs Cincinnati has rankings implications, it's the BGSU vs WMU clash which should tell us who rules in Mid America.

D1A

Big 10

This is an important weekend. Someone still needs to try to unseat those elite teams, and to do so you have to run the table in your own group. Michigan State could be that team, but will have to beat Minnesota to do it.

Meanwhile, Indiana has started to blossom under the new coaching staff, which has pushed the players a bit more. IU has a must-win game against a solid Wisconsin team.

Liberty

Tons of games with the headliner probably unbeaten Fordham against undefeated Iona. Northeastern and Boston College still have a thought to catching UMass in the New England division, and they play each other.

Albany is, shockingly, 3-0, but has Syracuse and Binghamton chasing in the Empire division. All eyes, though, are on whether Fordham can do something against the Gaels.

Rugby East

Notre Dame College takes on Kutztown and Penn State faces St. Bonaventure. Good tests all around.

Red River

North Texas takes its first steps into the conference and will have to visit LSU to do it. Won't be easy. Texas plays Oklahoma in a mirror image of their football teams' clash.

Rocky Mountain

Hold onto your seat because this is a momentous day. BYU opens up its new era under a new coach in a new conference. The Cougars take on Wyoming, and should win, but there are sterner tests ahead.

Meanwhile, Colorado State and Colorado battle for 1st place.

Other Games

Well, there's a little thing called the Commander-in-Chief Trophy, which is the round-robin between Army, Navy, and Air Force. It's usually a very tight contest, and should be again this year. Air Force takes on Navy in a game that is also for the Shea Cup, a challenge trophy between the two teams named for Lt. Col. Kevin Shea, who attended the Air Force Academy and then was cross-commissioned in the US Marine Corps.

He played rugby for the USAFA and helped coach at the Naval Academy. He was killed in action near Fallujah, Iraq on September 14, 2004, his 38th birthday.

Well, there, we've put it all into perspective for you, and will seamless segue into the picks for the week:
