Bordeaux Begles Scores While A Man Down

Of course after we spoke all week about Clermont Auvergne being undefeated, they lost.

It was inevitable - you can't go through the Top 14 26-0, it's too difficult to do that. And in the end, FloRugby fans saw Bordeaux-Begles drop Clermont Auvergne 23-19. And they did it by scoring the key try while down a man due to a yellow card.

Equally intriguing, Clermont accepted the defeat. Backed up against their own tryline and with time up, Clermont opted to kick to touch and take the close-loss bonus point. it was a prudent move, as a turnover might have meant a try for Bordeaux, and no bonus point at all.

Still, Clermont sits atop the Top 14, albeit not as securely as Stade Francais continues its strong opening run. After some massive player turnover, Paris is 4-1 and just a point behind Clermont in the standings. Chasing is Racing 92, so, of course, FloRugby has Stade vs Racing LIVE on Sunday.

Clermont will have to bounce back and can do it against a wounded but recovering Toulon. The club that usually has one of the biggest payrolls in professional rugby, started 0-2, won a wild one over Castres, got thumped by Stade, and then crushed Agen 33-3, with Josua Tuisova, Eric Escande, Liam Messam, Anthony Belleau, and Malakai Fekitoa scoring tries. Toulon could be back on track.

What else is going on? We talked about Montpellier needing to win last week, and they did, emphatically, beating Toulouse 66-15. That was a humbling loss for Toulouse but a crucial day for Montpellier.

Castres had hoped for a win to get back in the top three or four, but instead, Racing got a try from Virimi Vakatawa in the first two minutes and won 27-11. Now in the middle of the pack, Castres, the defending Top 14 champs, have work to do.
