Good Weekend For Norwich University Teams

It was a good week for Norwich University rugby.

The Cadets women's team secured an impressive victory over AIC in the NCAA-varsity NIRA, while the men's team continued to rack up the victories in D2.

The Cadet women led 12-0 early against AIC thanks to two tries from prop Amber Kelly. AIC clawed back but a try from Reagan Aldersea staked the Northfield, VT team to a 19-10 halftime lead.

Not for long. AIC flanker Siale Alatini's second try made it 19-15, and while Sheila Decker added a penalty for Norwich, AIC tied it up with a try from Melissa Dessources and a conversion from Kassidy Piotier.

With the game deadlocked 22-22, it was Norwich that finished the stronger. Good pressure from the Cadets set up kickable penalties, and Decker nailed two to finished the game 28-22.

"I'm really proud of the way our team battled all game for 80 minutes," said Norwich women's head coach Austin Hall. "This was one of the more memorable games in program history in recent memory and it's a big win for us to beat a team we haven't beat in a while."

Norwich is now 1-1 in NIRA.

Meanwhile, the winning just keeps on coming for the Norwich men, who won their 17th straight league game 41-24 over Roger Williams.

Junior Nate Rolling scored three tries while William Rambin and Travis Bartniski also went over. Jeffrey Minicucci was a perfect 5-5 on conversions and added two penalty goals.

For both of these teams, the results have rankings ramifications. For the men, there's not much higher the Cadets can go, but the continued strong performances make Norwich a #1 contender.

For the women, this almost certainly is enough to bump the Cadets into FloRugby's women's Elite rankings, as Norwich had been very close to making the top 15 anyway, and AIC was ranked #12 this past week.
